Color of the Year for 2019
is Spice of Life, a brick red
with orange undertones. This
color is inspired by nostalgic
journeys back in time, the
renewal of folklore aesthetics
and the revival of interest in the
American naturalist painters of
the 19th and 20th centuries.

RIGHT BOTTOM Spiced Honey

is the 2019 AKZONOBEL
Color of the Year. This tone is
a warm amber, which can be
calming and nourishing as well
as stimulating and energizing,
depending on the lights and
colors surrounding it.

"Whether it be forest, moss, olive or emerald,
green is not exhausted yet," said Lauren Evans
of San Francisco-based Lauren Evans Interiors. "People are still craving that punch of color
without overdoing it, and green does that and
still manages to add a sense of serenity to a space."
While green is primarily trending in the kitchen,
blue is dominating the bath because of its association
with serenity. According to Rob Haley, color trend
manager, wood coatings, at AkzoNobel, more blue
tones will continue to emerge in bath and spa areas.
"Bright, vivid, blue tones continue to be popular
and may reinforce a person's connection to water with the peace and tranquility the color blue
brings," he said.
On the opposite end of the color wheel, yellows
and oranges are also being used to echo the outdoors. Pantone's Color of the Year, Living Coral,
references its namesake with a warm orange hue.
Sherwin-Williams' 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay, echoes the desert with its earthy tone.
"Terracotta has been trending in a big way, and
I really fell in love with this earthy hue," said Sue
Wadden, director of color marketing at SherwinWilliams. "I've been seeing this color pop up everywhere - from fashion, to home décor, to accessories. I think it shows that the bohemian aesthetic
is now evolving into the desert modern look."
NATURAL FINISHES

When it comes to finishes and surfaces, consumers are craving authentic materials like distressed
natural woods and stone.
"Tactile textures are important to combat the
high-tech feel of our devices,"said Sandra Sampson, vice president of PR and communications at
Color Marketing Group. "There is a yearning for
seeing the beauty in imperfection."
In addition to natural surfaces, metallic finishes
- particularly copper and gold - will continue
to trend because more people are viewing them
as neutral but warm tones. These finishes look
sophisticated and add a heritage feel to the design.
For more modern designs, matte-black finishes
will work well for appliances and fixtures.This finish has a dramatic tone that allows it to stand out
in a minimalist space and complement a variety
of other finishes and tones.

feeling of lush greenery, and
Mojito Shimmer features a distinctive frosty-green coating.

"Mixing finishes is definitely in,"said Forint, explaining that consumers are
finally beginning to grasp that matching them is outdated."You can blend in
darker, burnished and reflective hardware, facets and lighting with the warm
tones that are trending."

EVOLVING HUES

The emergence of warmer, richer hues and finishes is a response to the years
of cool neutrals. Before consumer preferences shift back to cool tones, the
trending colors will become more complex and develop more undertones.
"We will have 'gradations' of color where the hues aren't as clear but are
mixed,"said Finkell, explaining that she expects to see more gray undertones
in the hues consumers choose.
Homeowners will continue embracing a departure from technology in
their color references, and manufacturing innovations will allow them to find
more tactile finishes and materials that uphold their desire for authenticity.
Individual preferences and global insights - particularly from the simple and
Zen-like qualities of Scandinavian and Japanese design - will also play a part
in modern projects.
"The interpretation and perception of these concepts are left to the individual," said Sampson. "These trending colors will be used more as people
seek adventure and calm in a world of technology."

