DESIGN FOR WELL-BEING
According to Pekel, NARI members are not specifically calling out for design for well-being, although the association is inclined to gravitate toward
products that have those qualities, such as low-VOC materials and exchange
systems for air quality. He said his members do report more design for living
in place, although it is not relegated to the concept of aging. Rather, it is more
about creating a living environment that is more comfortable and intuitive
for all occupants.
THE SMART HOME
"Our studies have shown that consumers are inundated with the wow factors
of the connected kitchen and bath," said Darcy. "We feel strongly that millennials have grown up with this environment, and as they start remodeling
and buying, there will be more demand for this."
According to Pekel, smart home design means different things to different
people. It becomes a relative term to each homeowner as to how much of this
technology is actually relevant to them.
"There is a lot more that has to happen to get this moving,"added Darcy."It
is not at the pace we thought it would be, but it is evolving, and we are on the
forefront of trying to bring communities together
to communicate this."
According to Fiser, technology in the home
is starting to have a major impact on the aging
population as well. There are now sensors that
can be incorporated into a home to report emergencies. He also said as artificial intelligence increases, it eases the controlling of the systems
within a house.
LIVING IN PLACE
"Living in place design ties into well-being, and
we have recently partnered with the Certified Living in Place Institute, which offers best-in-class
certification,"said Darcy."Manufacturers are embracing this idea, which also encompasses multiple
generations living in a home. Our industry needs
more education on this so we can deliver a more
sustainable remodel."
