elcome to 2019! Our outlook for the remodeling and construction industry is somewhat on
the fence this year, and a variety of factors are
playing a part.
We know we need to take more action to rectify
the labor shortage - skilled and professional - and
the industry is buzzing with intelligent solutions.
As of press time, tariff talks with China seemed
to be moving in a more positive direction, which
could affect the price of building materials.
Rising interest rates have turned off some potential buyers - although
more millennials are now in a position to purchase their first homes - but
many homeowners opting to stay put are investing in remodeling projects.
One such homeowner is a dear friend of mine, who recently had his
kitchen remodeled - just about three years after his master bath received a
total gut renovation. When these two particular rooms need major updates,
the homeowner needs to seriously consider his/her budget to ensure the
outcome is exactly what they want. If that means scheduling one renovation
at a time, so be it.

A before-and-after look at my
friend Chandler's kitchen
My friend lives in a one-bedroom condo in our
crowded - but wonderful - city of Atlanta, and
although there was not much leeway to alter the
kitchen's footprint, he and his design professional
made clever choices to make the space much more
usable for his needs.
He chose some classic products and materials
that - according to our experts in this issue's special section - have and will stand the test of time.
Those include stainless-steel appliances, LED
lighting, subway tile for the backsplash and graypainted cabinets.
A layered lighting plan is a must to make a
space more functional, which is especially true in
a heavily used kitchen like my friend's. Several can
lights were added to brighten up the space, two
industrial-style pendants highlight the bar, and a
stylish chandelier/pendant was installed over the
dining area.
Since every kitchen needs to also incorporate
some modern and personalized elements, he
requested customized wine storage in the cabinets above the fridge, as well as a few glass-front,
LED-lighted uppers to display his collection of
wine glasses.
No remodeling project is without its timing and
budget challenges, but my friend is truly pleased
with both of his major renovations. Despite our
industry's cautious optimism about the year ahead,
there is still the need for customized, functional
spaces to call your own.
