TRADITION & MOSS IN THE MASTER BATH

BRINGING HOME RESTAURANT STYLE

The kitchen, which had featured early-2000s wood cabinets, a brown granite
countertop and a partial backsplash of the same material, got a total refresh
without altering the footprint or layout. Maggio transformed the modest
space by taking inspiration from some of the couple's favorite hospitality
spaces like the Pendry San Diego Hotel.
One major budget-friendly solution was keeping the kitchen cabinetry
and painting it a fresh, glossy white. In addition to the new cabinet finish,
Maggio incorporated a mirrored, beveled subway tile backsplash that goes all
the way to the ceiling, a look reminiscent of a high-end restaurant bar. Paired
with the white cabinets, the backsplash adds depth to the room, making it
appear significantly larger.
Pendants were also inspired by restaurant style, and Maggio covered
the face of the peninsula with fabric to add a hospitality feel and serve as a
sound buffer in an otherwise open area with many hard surfaces.The quartz
countertop has a marble look and a thicker slab for a more substantial feel.
Creating a waterfall peninsula increased the sense of luxury in the budgetfriendly kitchen where all appliances were reused.

For the master bathroom, the couple requested a simpler, more serene, spalike environment. Maggio delivered this with a spacious prefabricated vanity
in a furniture style. She continued the use of marble in this room, installing it
on the floor in a classic herringbone pattern. Metal finishes in a mix of brass
and gold and small, round sconces above the large mirror maintain the home's
lighting theme but with a traditional twist.
In the steam shower, Maggio featured marble in a different pattern on the
floor and included two types of wall tile, including one in an upside-down
teardrop shape, which was used on a focal wall only.
"There were enough statements going on in this space that we didn't need to
make another one,"she said of the decision to limit the teardrop tile the clients loved.
The selection of tiles displays variety in scale with a smaller pattern on the accent wall, a medium pattern on the floor and a large-scale tile for the remainder
of the shower walls and half wall outside the shower that frames the tub alcove.

"It's really special when a client isn't playing it
safe and is excited about us being creative," said
Maggio. "Everybody has a bold taste in them,
but whether or not they are willing to go for it is
another story."


A BRIGHT & COLORFUL BATHROOM

In the guest bath, Maggio continued the hospitality style with striking contrast and daring wallpaper. Several elements from the kitchen were repeated
here, like the thick, marble slab on the vanity top; the round, modern sconces;
and the beveled wall tiles in the shower.
Another element she used to create the hotel look was the open vanity,
which has a glass shelf. While open vanities are often seen in hotels, those
with storage are more common in residences, according to Maggio. Additionally, the vanity's openness also allows the space to feel larger as does
the designer's choice to continue the floor tiles into the shower. Even with
the continuous flooring, she added contrast with the black marble shower
curb - a look that was inspired by her earlier project the clients had admired.

wallpaper creates the room's movement and color,which the designer said adds
an element of luxury because it's kind of a brave move on the clients'part.
