For any family that enjoys cooking and entertaining, an inefficient layout can be frustrating. This
kitchen had a working triangle that was more
than 9 square feet, with a refrigerator closer to the
mudroom/pantry area and completely outside of
the actual prep space.
The design team relocated the plumbing and
the placement of the island, allowing the sink and
refrigerator to be in reach of each other and the
range.When the clients realized they did not want
the powder room immediately off of the kitchen,
that space was reutilized for the pantry, as well as
for a separate beverage area.
"We were able to create not only a functional
space for cooking family meals, we also have
workstations for prepping, cleaning and coffee/bar areas out of the way for guests to use
while not getting in the way of the cook," said
Hicks, who used AutoCAD for the construction details.
The layout was also improved by the new island design, which turned a double set up into a
large, single piece with functional elements on all
four sides. The side nearest to the pantry houses
a built-in microwave drawer, while the main side
closest to the range houses the sink, dishwasher,
recycle/trash units and utensils. The other side
has hidden cabinets underneath the seating, and
the fourth side hosts an integrated icemaker and
base cabinet.

cleaning spaces incorporated," said Hicks, explaining that
they used space from a former
powder room to create a coffee/drink station for guests, as
well as expand the pantry.

By redistributing the space from the former powder room, the design team was able to expand
the separate mudroom and pantry to include a
pet center and laundry room. This space was a
challenge because the team had already ordered
custom cabinetry for the two divided rooms - the
pantry and the laundry/mudroom - when the
clients changed their mind and wanted to combine the spaces.
"Here we saw yet another chance to wow them,"
said Hicks."We sat down and drew the new single
room, then instead of wasting all the new custom
cabinets we ordered, we worked out a plan to redesign using every piece we could."
Fortunately, the team only ended up needing
one more base cabinet and a few finished panels.
The end result is a pantry tall enough to require
a sliding ladder, laundry machines to service the
downstairs areas, storage for shoes and coats and
a pet center for the clients' dogs.
"Initially, the pet center was supposed to be a
small area for bowls, food and leashes,"said Hicks.
"Once we opened the space, we redesigned it to
tuck the food bowls under a counter and included
a grooming center and a cabinet to store food and
all the other pet supplies."
