Understanding and working
with a younger generation
ACCORDING TO GALLUP, about 73 million millennials were born between 1980 and 1996, and
their goals are not all different from those of other
generations. Their quality of life is important to
them, they want lucrative jobs, and they strive for
financial stability.
Millennials are the first generation of digital
natives or "native speakers" and are completely
savvy when it comes to using computers, navigating social media, etc. This can be a hinderance or
a help when it comes to having one as a client -
depending on how you look at it.

WHICH FACTORS MATTER MOST?

MILLENNIALS AS CLIENTS/CONSUMERS

This generation is often made up of busy professionals who are in the market for their first home,
although they may be on a stricter budget than
others because of student debt and/or the rise in
housing interest rates. They may have young kids
and like living in the city.
Millennials have the means to research products and prices at their fingertips at any given time,
and they are exposed to a lot of information.They
are often well educated and do their homework,
and because of this, they like their design professionals to be straightforward and communicative.
"The advantage of being older is that we have
the experience; however, a win-win is to also have
the knowledge to be able to speak the same language as the younger generations," said Laura
Eagan, CKD, owner of Estrella Cabinet and Design Center in Goodyear, Ariz. "Also important

Budget is the main factor for most millennials,
which means quality may not be as important to
them when it comes to their kitchens and baths.
They do a lot of price shopping because they want
to spend their money wisely, but they do not always realize when a product is not up to par.
"Millennials are not wishy washy, but they are
not always in tune with the advantages of opting
for higher-quality materials," said Mitzi Beach,
ASID, CAPS, owner of Mitzi Beach Designs in
Wichita, Kan. "We need to stretch that mindset
because there is still room to teach them about
better alternatives by making valid arguments and
not just trying to make a sale."
One goal of design professionals is to make sure
your clients are not making the wrong decisions
and having to rip out a kitchen or bath in two
years. You need to teach them ahead of time so
they don't have to learn from a bad experience.
According to Jonathan Rowland,Virginia territory manager for Schieber Sales, millennials tend
to spend more on appliances and technology and
will sacrifice on cabinets and countertops.
"The clients of this demographic are definitely
still on a budget and will shop around for a deal,
from plumbing to appliances," said Paula Kennedy, CMKBD, CAPS, of Timeless Kitchen Design in the Seattle area. "They are willing to do the
demolition and paint themselves to save money or
have a friend do framing, for instance."
