According to Cheryl Kees Clendenon, owner of
In Detail Interiors in Pensacola, Fla., staying on
top of emerging trends is important, which is why
she attends invaluable industry events like the
Kitchen & Bath Industry Show and High Point
Market to stay relevant. Keeping updated social
media accounts and websites is also something
design professionals must do to attract millennials.
"I had one client in particular who found me on
Houzz and then searched ALL my social media,"
said Kennedy. "I live pretty transparent online,
and I and don't separate business from personal.
She hired me for that because she liked who I
was and not just an image I manufactured. This
particular characteristic is really important for
businesses to understand."
According to Rowland, some kitchen and bath
showrooms offer package deals for certain products as a way to get people with lower budgets in
the door. If showroom experts want to try and
push them to the next level, they need to make
sure they are on point as experts and innovators
in their market.
Suzanne Scott, owner of Seattle-based Suzanne
Kristine Interiors, is a millennial, and to attract
clients of her generation, she offers an extensive
portfolio to illustrate that she understands them
and their overall style, which includes saturated
colors and funky tiles.
"They will look at your work to see if you have
similar interests and what you are open to,"she added.
And if a millennial wants to reward you for a
job well done? The collective opinion from our
interviewees is that they will give you credit on
their own social media accounts through tagging
and posting photos.
"If they are impressed, they will sing our praises
to anyone who will listen and will post online reviews to the masses," said Beach. "This is a huge
carrot for us to give them what they want; you can't
put a price tag on that."

When working with millennial clients, design
professionals often say they appreciate their
responsiveness - they usually waste no time in
making decisions, which makes the process more
efficient for the designer.
"Our younger clients always get back to us
promptly without fail, and we love this,"said Clendenon, who explained that she doesn't label clients
by age, rather, she has developed six types of client
profiles and their characteristics."This has been super effective, and these archetypes can be any age."
Millennials are also known for doing ample
research on industry trends and often have their
general style illustrated on various social media
platforms to show their design professional.
"Younger-generation clients will come to you
with their own ideas, but they also need to understand your role," said Veronica Solomon, owner/
lead designer at Casa Vilora Interiors in Katy,
Texas."During a project, I eventually advise them
to be more hands off and let me do my job, but
not before I educate them on what my role is and
establish trust."
Too much research can also breed confusion,
which is often when millennials find they need
the help of a design professional.
"They love to be hands-on so they can do the
research, which is ironic because then they become overwhelmed and bring me in," said Nina
Green, principal interior designer at NGD Interiors in Churchville, Pa., who added that because
she is also a millennial, she is educated on smart
systems and how to incorporate those into her
clients' projects.
According to Scott, a lot of her millennial projects involve a first-time remodel, and those particular clients often do not understand what the
whole process entails.
"Television shows on HGTV do not give a realistic idea,"she added."Setting clear expectations
about the construction schedule and budget can
help them make the selections easier."
It is also important to ask a lot of questions to
find out what works for your clients and how you
can help them get there.
"Do not waste time trying to give them info on
products they are not interested in - it's not about
what we think they need to have," said Beach. "In
a nutshell, they grew up with a new consumerism
mentality.They want the best quality, they want it
right now, and they want it at the best price."
MILLENNIALS AS PROFESSIONALS

According to the Pew Research Center,millennials
became the largest generation in the labor force in
2016, although they may not be the most engaged.
