REUSING AND RECYCLING

Despite the mostly non-salvageable elements of
the outdated bathroom, Peddicord appreciated the
solidly built wood cabinetry, which complemented
wood found in other areas of the home, so he decided to keep it. Luckily, the layout of the bathroom had worked well for the homeowners, and
the designer approved, so the cabinets remained
with the addition of new quartz countertops. He
also retained the counter-to-ceiling mirrors above
the vanities and affixed MDF frames stained in
bronze with a hint of golden copper at the edges.
"If we can keep something and make it look
new, I'm 100 percent for it," said the designer.
He also held onto the existing birdcage, nickelfinish cabinet hardware because felt its silvery-gray
tone mixed well with the modern shape and OldWorld bronze of the new faucets and shower fixtures he selected. The oil-rubbed finish features a
copper reveal on the edges,which he repeated in the
mirror's wood stain. Building again on the wood of
the cabinetry, Peddicord paired a matching wood
plank tile with tiles featuring a stone look to create a
vision that was modern and rustic at the same time.
Whenever possible, he selected sustainable
products for the renovation. He used LEED
Gold-certified paint, upgraded lighting to LED
and added motorized shades on an automatic timer to reduce heating and cooling needs. The light
fixtures contain bamboo stems. Peddicord also
chose products made of recycled materials, like
the tub, which is recycled copper, and the sinks and
pendants, which were made using recycled glass.
"I like designing in that way, a responsible way,"
he said. "When approaching the design, I just try
to impart a lot of that into my work. Manufacturers have led the way in having a lot of environmentally responsible materials readily available.
It makes it really easy for a designer nowadays."
A SHOWER FIT FOR ROYALTY

To provide the dramatic castle style the homeowners were looking for, Peddicord crafted a
stone shower with an arched entry and niches for
candles. The shower is designed at a 45-degree
angle from the wall, and its exterior is constructed
of cultured stone. Its enclosing walls retain heat,
while the niches allow for air flow.
"It adds a romantic, spa-like feel," said Peddicord. "It was a unique design and is dramatic
and unexpected. I think that the shower makes
the space."
The clients clearly had a penchant for natural
stone and had shown the designer many photos of showers with walls of rock, a style suitable
for a vacation home, according to Peddicord. But
because natural stone can be impractical and difficult to clean, he did not consider it a good op-

tion for an everyday shower. Instead, he selected a stone-look porcelain tile
that provided the desired appearance and offered an easy-care solution. The
cultured stone and porcelain had the benefit of being more sustainable than
natural stone, too.
DESIGN FOR EVERYBODY

In addition to its aesthetic and sustainable aspects, the shower offers aging-inplace features. Its wide opening and zero-threshold entrance make stepping
- or rolling - in easy. Two large benches were built into the shower, offering
attractive seating. With a showerhead and separate handshower, Peddicord
created additional functionality.
The copper tub has a low profile, making it accessible, and it boasts interior
insulation for heat retention, as well as air jets to create bubbles for soothing
hydrotherapy. Like the shower fixture, the freestanding tub filler includes a
handheld spray.Textured flooring for slip resistance adds further practicality
to the striking space.
Crafting a bathroom that offered a modern take on the Middle Ages and
keeping an eye on sustainability and aging-in-place features was challenging
enough, but structural issues brought in additional trials.
While fitting the shower's linear drain in the second-floor bathroom required reframing between the levels, it was improperly installed flashing that
caused the need to rip out an entire exterior wall of the home and to fix the
windows. During the delay of a few weeks, Peddicord simply shifted his focus
to other areas of the home, which he was also in the process of renovating.
"It was one of those things that comes up in construction,"said the designer.
"The clients handled it like a champ."

