Maximizing Space and Views

A mountaintop home transforms from dated and dark to open and light
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ., IS KNOWN FOR ITS STUNNING VIEWS and desert hikes.
With this in mind, a couple purchased a home sight unseen that embraced
both city and desert views, but upon visiting the home for the first time they
realized it had a design that failed to live up to its location.The clients turned
to local designer Michele Logan of Angelica Henry Design to turn the house
into their dream home.

LAYOUT CHALLENGES

While the kitchen had a lot of square footage, it was set up as a galley with
an island, which made the working spaces narrow and highly inefficient.The
clients asked for more storage, an added family room and a layout that better
captured the views of the city below.
Making the floor plan more efficient was a challenge because of awkwardly
placed structural posts and utility chases. Thankfully, Logan discovered the
original plans were available in AutoCAD, so she developed the new space
plans from the architect's original drawings and then further developed
detailed elevations within the same program. This also helped in presenting
her plans to the client.
"Some clients have a hard time visualizing design concepts, but with highly
detailed drawings, sometimes 3D renderings aren't necessary," said Logan.
While reworking the plans, she addressed the divisive hall closet, transformed part of the patio into a family room and created more storage in the
kitchen. She found the solution opposite the kitchen windows, where there
originally was a wall with two doors - one leading to a large laundry room
and another to an overly big powder room.
"While studying the original plans, it was clear there was an opportunity
to capture unused space in these adjacent rooms," said Logan. "By adding a
single hallway in between and moving the two doors inside that hallway, it
opened up that wall for much-needed storage."

it lack storage, but it also had
outdated bold, dark ﬁnishes
that made it uninviting for the
new homeowners."

After stealing two feet of space from the laundry and powder rooms, the previously empty wall
added 17 linear feet of usable space in the kitchen,
including full-height wine storage, a wet bar and
a baking center with double ovens. All this new
storage features soft, neutral-toned cabinet doors
with simple panel designs. Stainless-steel appliances and hardware add metallic touches to the
space, but the subtle colors ensure that the focus
is on the desert and city outside.
"Because the home was nestled into the side of
a mountain, I felt it was important to blend the
interior finishes with the natural surroundings,"
said Logan, explaining that the quartzite countertops and wood floors also add warmth to â
the neutral kitchen.
