A wine bar was high on the
list of goals for the kitchen
renovation and provides
an entertaining space with
bonus storage.

First, the team found 1-in. galvanized water supply lines that were
75 percent blocked with rust and metal, and they all had to be replaced.
The electrical panel required upgrades too, and while the panel itself was
newer, all the wiring running to it also had to be replaced. Finally, when the
gas line was tested, there was a leak that had been there for an unknown
length of time. Every connection in the old line had to be inspected to
find the problem.
"Overall, those were major expenses the homeowners weren't planning on,"
said the designer."They had to come up with additional funds to take care of
the fixes that 'aren't pretty but are essential.'"
To recoup some of the budget, Molly made changes to certain product
selections, for example, opting for quartz countertops instead of natural stone
and selecting a semi-custom cabinet line.
CHALLENGE #3 - FULFILLING A PINTEREST WISH & ADDING STORAGE

With the structural and utilities changes handled, the layout of the kitchen
could take shape. The homeowners presented an idea for a U-shaped island
with a bench they had seen on Pinterest. Because the Pinterest kitchen was
larger than the one being renovated, the concept had to be adjusted for size.
Additionally, the inner part of the U had to be large enough to fit the homeowners'existing dining table. Molly used Chief Architect to plan the kitchen
layout and ProKitchen Software for elevations so that the U-shaped island
and a wine bar, another necessity, would both be possible. Creative ideas for
storage also helped maximize the space.

"The whole goal was to add more storage and
make it a lot larger of a kitchen,"said Molly. She incorporated cabinetry beneath the banquette seating
inside the island's U.The ends of the U also have usable storage - a solution ideal for keeping children's
items within their reach. Above the wine coolers,
Molly added open shelving between the cabinetry.
The "traditional with a flare of rustic" kitchen
meets the homeowners' request for a space that
is both family friendly and good for entertaining.
With a custom hood in the same wood as the
bar shelves, a brick backsplash behind parallel
walls and a mix of metal finishes from the large
island pendants to the bar sconces, the broad, fully
vaulted space forms a cohesive whole that honors
the homeowners' style.
When they started the renovation, the family
expressed a desire to be done in time for Christmas.
Despite a number of unexpected structural challenges, the Fitch Hill team maintained the tight
timeline,getting the family home in the nick of time.
"We have great subcontractors, and we were
working on the home six to seven days a week,"said
Chris."It was a lot in a short period of time."

