REMEMBERING THE FARM'S HISTORY
Although the owner wanted a modern, functional
kitchen, he also did not want to forget the house's
past and the farming and family history.To guarantee this, Beck carried some original elements
from the home into the new design, like the original oak floors.These were pulled up from the dining room and the breakfast area and were reused
as borders around the new porcelain tile flooring
for a unique, geometric look.
"This technique married the old and new, and
the porcelain tiles provided an easy-to-maintain,
suitable surface for entertaining,"said the designer.
The dining room furniture, which was built in
1945 by the owner's grandfather, who used cherry
lumber from the farm,was kept,and the new seating
at the peninsula and island was chosen to complement it. Barn wood sliding doors provide access to
the laundry room from the kitchen and reference the
home's farming origins, and the open shelving provides plenty of places to display family collectibles.
Around the island, stainless-steel perforated
panels, which take the place of cabinet fronts, are
a nod to old pie safes - antique pieces of furniture
designed to hold food items. In addition, the decorative pendants above the island and the peninsula
are a modern take on barn lights.
"I love reaching design solutions that work best
for the inhabitants of a space to be able to live,
work and play in a built environment that supports
them in the best way," said Beck. "It was a delight
to see their reaction when I presented their plans
and another delight to see the reaction to their
renovated space."
