THE DAYS OF GENERIC DESIGN PRODUCTS

for universal design remodel projects are over.
Today, these products are as functional as they
are aesthetically pleasing for aging homeowners
or those with physical limitations.
Simply put, universal design is designing for
the needs of as many people as possible - those of
different ages and abilities. The ultimate goal is to
make the space convenient, safe and functional for
everyone who enters.
"I love using an example of an adjustable shower
bar," said Karen Richmond, CMKBD, CAPS,
CGP, of the Oregon-based Neil Kelly Co. "If
mom gets a broken leg, she can still sit down, reach
for the handheld shower and [bathe] herself. People can still function, and they can do it in style."
Here are four ways to improve your home's accessibility without compromising on design.

These four changes can improve

Improvements to ease mobility include:

lines and warm, neutral colors

walk-in shower with controls

"Little touches help, too, like making smart flooring choices that are aesthetically pleasing or temperature appropriate,"added Barbara Miller, ASID,
CAPS, of Neil Kelly Co.
2. IMPROVE FUNCTIONALITY

1. MAKE IT EASY TO GET AROUND.

Mobility is key. Create floor plans that are easy for
all people to use and spaces that can be adapted
for people with specific needs. This includes using
materials that are both sturdy and functional.
"Design to create minimal efforts when mechanisms are involved for technology, appliances,
fixtures, accessories, cabinetry and flooring," said
Kristine LeVernois, CKBD, CAPS, of Portland,
Ore.-based LeVernois Design Studio.

"Widening doorways
"Improving clearances to allow wheelchair passage
"Lowering countertop heights for sinks and kitchen cabinets
"Lowering electrical switches and outlets to heights that can be easily reached
"Adding grab bars as needed
"Selecting smart, intuitive appliances, fixtures and accessories that ease use
and require minimal effort
"Creating an open floor plan, free of barriers, with less doors and hallways
to navigate
"Including decorative railings around steps and ramps to ease
exterior entrances

Going from one room to the next might be a challenge, and it's one aspect
many homeowners don't think about when getting older. Add aging eyes,
and there could be a chance for tripping and injury. One way to avoid this
where there's a transition in height or a step in the floor is by adding highly
contrasting colors.
"If you're stepping from a bathroom into a shower, don't include a white
bathroom floor, white curb and a white shower," said Miller. "Use a white
shower step with a brown floor so you can see where the step is."
Grab bars are an essential component of universally designed homes.
Most brands manufacture attractive grab bars that can match the rest of the
bath suite.
