To unify the kitchen with the neighboring areas of this open-space plan, Carroll coordinated
some accent colors and the hues in the granite
countertops with the adjacent bar area, as well as
the sitting and dining areas. Instead of a wall of
heavy cabinets, the designer broke those up with
some open shelving in the bar area and glass-front
units near the stove.
To meet the clients' request for more texture,
Carroll mixed tile, metal and wood in the bar area
and used a limestone backsplash in the wine area
and in the back of the glass cabinets that brings
some lightness against the darker alder cabinets
in the kitchen. The texture of the wood-format
hood also mimics that of the limestone, and a
patinaed metal backsplash provides some drama
behind the cooktop.
To improve upon the lighting in the kitchen,
Carroll added recessed and undercabinet lighting, as well as LED strips under the bar and open
shelving and in the glass cabinets. Handcrafted
bronze and frosted-glass pendants highlight the
peninsula and breakfast areas.

the gaps. The clients like the look of the material,
and this saved a lot on the budget, which Carroll
said is always a concern for clients doing a project
of this magnitude.

Carroll had designed a floating element for the ceiling, which incorporated
an image of the Arizona desert by an Italian artist, but when she got the price
to have it made and installed, it was going to be too costly.The end result was
a less-expensive paint and texture treatment she says was artfully plastered
for a multi-dimensional look.
To make up for the lack of storage that often is a result of an open floor
plan, Carroll added about six more feet of lower cabinets, which include ample
drawers. The much larger island, a peninsula and the breakfast bar provide
necessary storage, as does the redesigned pantry.
