From Small to Spa-Like
Through clever problem-solving, a dated bath
transforms into an open and welcoming space

THE COMBINATION OF LITTLE, OUTDATED AND OLD can be a disaster
in a bathroom. One designer was tasked with tackling such a calamity with an
upstairs bath in a 1951-dated colonial home.
"The bathroom had many problems," said Sheryl Steinberg, founder and
principal designer of Bethesda, Md.-based Sheryl Steinberg Interior Design.
"It needed a complete demolition and renovation to accommodate all the
fixtures and requirements for a modern family."
CHALLENGE #1: OPENING UP A TIGHT SPACE WITHOUT EXPANDING

Set on the top floor with a bedroom and a hallway on either side, this 5-ft.
by 7-ft. bath had to remain in its same footprint.This already cramped room
also had a sloped ceiling, which limited the vertical use of the walls.
"I resolved these issues by combining effective space planning and targeted
fixture research," said Steinberg, who used AutoCAD to create dimension,
lighting and electric plans, as well as wall elevations and the tile design.
The designer looked for products meant to save space, like a toilet with a
smaller footprint and a frameless, top-rail, sliding-glass shower door to replace the former shower curtain. Since the fixtures and vanity would remain
in their original places, she had to ensure the entry door did not hit the new
glass shower enclosure. Putting the towel bar on the far side of the shower
and providing a backstop for the door solved this potential issue.

CHALLENGE #2: PROVIDING
FOR BOTH FRIENDS & FAMILY

This tiny bathroom would need to accommodate
overnight guests and the busy household on a
daily basis. Steinberg replaced the former vanity top, which had no storage underneath, with
a slim and modern piece with several drawers, a
cabinet and an integrated stone top. A recessed
LED-lit medicine cabinet with interior electrical
and USB outlets provides for any additional accessories needed.
Utilizing the precious wall space above the
toilet, Steinberg also installed an open shelf with
a towel rack underneath for linen storage.
"It needed to be high enough so towels
wouldn't hang close to the toilet but low enough
for the sloped ceiling," she said, adding that a
niche inside the shower provides even more storage for bath products.
CHALLENGE #3: CREATING
A MODERN, SPA-LIKE FEEL

The clients were inspired by the modern hotels
they visit on vacation. To create the idea of these
open and relaxing spaces, Steinberg used a calming palette of white, gray, blue, polished chrome,
stone and glass.
"I also custom designed a glass mosaic for the
shower accent tile, incorporating four hues of blue
in iridescent and matte finishes to create depth
and a watery, spa-like feel,"said the designer, adding that she repeated this motif in the vanity backsplash and walls.
"For such a small bathroom, there was still a
tremendous amount of planning, researching,
communicating, drawing, measuring and coordinating with the whole team," said Steinberg.
"Because there was no room for error, every
inch counted!"
