"Another helpful marker for determining a client's budget is to ask them
about their home value in relation to the market and explain that the kitchen
investment be scaled appropriately,"said the designer."It is also important to
qualify the client before designing and pricing the kitchen. It puts the client in
a very awkward position if they meet with a designer and discuss ideas - only
to discover they are unable to afford the project. It is also disadvantageous
for the designer, who has invested time to find out the client is not qualified
to work with."
Patricia Davis Brown, CKD, CBD, owner of Vero Beach, Fla.-based Patricia Davis Brown Designs, says it is important for a designer to be up front
with their fees and not sell themselves short.
"Time and effort go into developing plans; know your worth and set your
number,"she added."The client will either cut and run, or you can help them
determine the value of having a design professional on the team before you
move forward."
According to Carroll, she and her team address any initial sticker shock
by first connecting with the client, inspiring them with the possibilities and
eventually gaining their trust. 
"If there is still monetary trepidation on their part, we can value engineer
or find less costly alternatives to what we specified," she said, and added that
those can include removing select items without compromising the overall
design, completing the project in phases instead of all at once and creating a
wish list they can look forward to when they feel financially ready to proceed.
CHALLENGING CLIENTS

Charles Kimball, lead designer at Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Premier
Companies, once had a client who would walk through the project space
after the team was finished for the day.The client placed green painter's tape
on everything considered an issue, which translated into about 90 "issues"
raised on a weekly basis.
"This was demoralizing for our team of craftspeople, who have been producing great work for a few decades of their lives," he added. "The biggest
lessons learned here are knowing how to maintain these expectations and
that saying 'No' to the client is allowed in the relationship. "

In the past, McClain admits he tried to blame unrealistic expectations on his
clients, but later realized he as the designer is responsible for setting the tone
and letting clients know how he works. His firm uses what he calls a "How
We Work" document to alert clients of things such as response time for a call
or email, preferred communication method and how the company invoices.
"I also strive to be 100 percent transparent with our clients at all times
and instill this in my staff," said McClain. "We provide a weekly update so
there are no surprises when it comes time to invoice. Bonus: I can always rest
easy at night knowing I have done everything possible to keep our clients
informed and happy."
