Although she says it can be excruciating, Young feels one of the most important things designers can do with nightmare clients is to give them ample
time and attention - in person, because people tend to behave differently
using email and texts. She notes a variety of difficult clients, including those
who are insecure and need a lot of hand-holding; the panicked, out-of-control
client; and the one who enjoys being a bully.
"The best way to achieve some level of sanity with these clients is to try to
step back and figure out what is driving them to behave that way and develop
strategies to head off the behavior," said Young. "I have learned that with the
bully client, setting boundaries up front and sticking with them is the most
important step you can take in managing this behavior."
According to Carroll,a major part of being an interior designer is having good
people skills,which requires active listening,empathy,an aptitude for mediation
and most of all patience.She says the worst thing a designer can do with a tough
client is to ignore them - especially those who rely on research and hard facts.
"Instead, I calmly take control of the situation, articulating knowledgeable
ideas, factual information and detailed follow up that typically strengthens
trust in me, and then the rest of the project goes smoothly,"she added. "There
have been times though where a nightmare client and I don't end up with a
workable connection, and I have learned it's beneficial to both the client and
my business to just move on."
Brown strongly advises determining the client's personality before signing
on with them. She said it is important to avoid certain clients because interactions with them can create excess stress and even put you out of business.
"The way to protect yourself from difficult personalities is to recognize
those ahead of time," she added. "You don't want to be the rare professional

who has done everything right, only to have a target on your back after
the work is completed. Once you sign on the dotted line with someone
like this, you are at risk."

SCHEDULING CONFLICTS

To avoid project delays, it is important to recognize product lead times
across the globe, be transparent about completion expectations and plan
far in advance.
"The best way to avoid issues when putting together project timelines
is to evaluate priorities, stay organized, be thorough and remain confident
and professional,"said Carroll, who explained that while technology helps
most designers with scheduling these days, she still uses a daily reference
planner to keep track of appointments and installations.
Most kitchen and bath design projects are going to have some issues,
but there are several ways in which you can avoid those or lessen the blow
along the way. Our interviewees have come up with several solutions
through the years to alleviate these challenges, including:
ŠConduct a product review every time something is delivered.
ŠUnder-promise and over-deliver.
ŠManage client expectations & set simple client boundaries.
ŠChoose vendors willing to jump to attention no matter whose fault it is.
ŠLet the client know you will guide them toward their price-point charges.
All the issues discussed in this article can be alleviated by simply identifying and addressing the issues, knowing when to step in and maintaining
open lines of communication. 

