the walls as a nod to the port
city in which the clients live.

microwave, which is now concealed in a vertical cabinet.
The team designed a
6-in.-deep shelf that spans
the width of the terracotta
backsplash for convenience to
often-used items.
"Removing bulkheads allowed us to increase
the cabinet height to the ceiling, elongating and
emphasizing the vertical line, which helped the
proportions of the space feel more comfortable
and impressive," said Dillon.
Originally, she and her team thought the bulkheads were only concealing the ductwork for the
hood, but they also found plumbing lines for the
air conditioner and sprinkler system.
"Unfortunately, there was a very large plumbing stack that we couldn't relocate directly above
where the refrigerator was planned to go, so the
cabinet above the refrigerator was cut around part
of the bulkhead there," explained Dillon. "Once
we re-directed the venting for the hood, we were
able to remove any remaining bulkhead from the
refrigerator to the ovens."
The final challenge the design team overcame
was improving the function of a space without
altering or enlarging the footprint, which Dillon
says can be a hard concept for a client to grasp.
"After the dust settled, the kitchen was still going to be two walls and an island; we could not
include an addition, and it didn't make sense to
move the kitchen to the front of the house," she
added. "The challenge was coming up with a
more thoughtful layout, tailoring appliances to the
homeowners'specific needs and relocating them to
promote better flow, upgrading how the cabinets
function and designing every detail of the space
for the unique way their family uses the kitchen."
The judges chose this project as Kitchen of the
Year because of its great punch in a small space and
the gorgeous combination of materials.
