"Consumers are looking to maximize their space and have their favorite
items be tucked away but easily accessible," said Marisa Sanchez, senior
product manager, organizers, for Hardware Resources. "When you invest in
a beautiful slab of quartz, you want clean sightlines to show off your counters,
so small countertop items are no longer welcome."
Instead designated storage - particularly appliance garages and lift-up
shelves - is making it easy for consumers to have a 'home' for that everyday
blender or coffeemaker. In addition, users are requesting that upper cabinets
start higher on the wall than the standard 18 inches; this better accommodates these taller items when they are on the counter.
When it comes to uppers, more consumers are leaning toward the idea of
open shelving to reinforce sightlines and add character to their spaces. Since
it would be contradictory to crowd these shelves with clutter, instead homeowners are mainly asking for just a few shelves to display key items, break up
the space and add a touch of personalization.
"I'm seeing a trend for more open shelving and more space dedicated to a
walk-in pantry to store all the items traditionally stored in upper cabinets,"
said Sanchez.

OR A SOCIETY OF BUSY PEOPLE, the idea of
having an organized home is highly appealing. The popularity of influencers like
Japanese consultant Marie Kondo and the
trend toward minimalism have spurred
this movement of homeowners looking to
rid their houses of extraneous things - and then
beautifully store what they do have.
"Today's homeowners are increasingly drawn
to the idea of 'a place for everything, and everything in its place,'" said Stephanie Pierce, director
of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets.
"This industry is turning a very exciting corner
where information and inspiration for consumers
is plentiful and designers have more options, tools
and resources than ever before."

TRADING DISORDER FOR SIGHTLINES

According to WebMD, clutter can have a serious
impact on health - causing raised levels of cortisol,
a lack of focus, depression and anxiety and issues
with memory. Homeowners realizing this are asking for ways to hide or store things that would
normally be in view.

Having a place for everything means that the design team on a project needs
to be well acquainted with anything the client wants to store. Even with
enough square footage of cabinetry to hold all their possessions, that space
can be misused without proper organization.The only way to use every inch
of storage correctly is to plan ahead and know where everything will go in
the new design.
"Consumers really understand the importance of space and maximizing it,
and they want it to be functional for their specific needs,"said Shari McPeek,
advertising and public relations manager for Rev-A-Shelf. "This desire is
moving the specification of organizational accessories earlier in the design
phase, making sure they have cabinets that fit the accessories they want and
not the other way around."
Designers are appealing to this request by providing storage with personalized inserts and add-ons, including spice cabinets, trash pullouts, grooming
organizers and deep base drawers with adjustable pegs. According to â
Pierce, there has been a significant shift toward these types of drawers
