for designers & integrators in the bathroom

Designers, consumers and integrators often
perceive benefits of bath technology very differently. For instance, 71 percent of consumers say
it improves bathroom appearance, while only 38
percent of integrators think it does. Similarly, 60
percent of designers say the technology makes
it easier for seniors to use the bathroom, while
just 27 percent of consumers and 19 percent of
integrators feel that way. Finally, 71 percent of
designers say bath tech adds value to the home,
compared to 63 percent of consumers and 36 percent of integrators. All three groups were at about
65 percent when it comes to making the master
bath a more comfortable space.
On the perceived negatives side, 41 percent of
consumers think costs of the technology are too
high, while 60 percent of designers and 34 percent
of integrators said they think their clients feel it's
too expensive. Other perceived barriers include
that the tech is not essential in the bath, concerns
about privacy, security or breakage/repair. And 40
percent of integrators say wiring infrastructure is
not adequate to support the technology.

THE BATHROOM IS OFTEN A PLACE TO HIDE, relax, escape and unwind; the
explosion in popularity of the soaking tub is evidence of that. And while an
influx of technology might seem counterintuitive in a world where "relaxing"
increasingly means "unplugging,"more people are requesting - and designers
are specifying - electronics and connectivity in their private oases.
NKBA's recent "Bathroom Technology Awareness & Usage Report"asked
301 consumers about their familiarity, usage and projected wants/needs in the
area of home tech for the master bathroom and polled 206 designers and 47
technology integrators about how they specify and integrate bath tech. Consumers and pros weighed in on their feelings toward the technology, perceived
benefits and what was holding them back from installing these products.

KEY FINDINGS

While 82 percent of consumers regard their master bathrooms as a "relaxing
escape from a busy life,"and 72 percent like to listen to music there, 65 percent
said they email or text, 61 percent said they surf the web, and 55 percent said
they listen to or watch the news.The key is they want technology to help make
life easier, but they don't want their master bath to have a "techy"appearance.
Also on consumers' wish lists is controlling or monitoring all the systems
in the master bath with their phone or mobile device (39 percent) and that
the systems in the bath are voice-activated (34 percent). Sixty-one percent
said they want tech solutions that make them feel safe and help them relax,
while 76 percent desire tech solutions that make them more comfortable, like
heated floors or toilet seats.The most appealing master bath features were not
necessarily tech-oriented, however, 80 percent want an open, inviting space,
and 76 percent want the latest storage and organization solutions.
