Understanding LEDs
Myths & mysteries about what
should be our most chosen light source

I WALK INTO JOB SITES and inevitably hear about LEDs. "The technology is
not there yet.""I don't like the color.""We never used to have these problems."
And the list goes on. Most designers have a love/hate relationship with LED
lighting, so let's figure out why.To start, we will look at different types of lights
and talk about their pros and cons.

INCANDESCENT

The good old days when everything just worked. No special dimmers, and
if you wanted more light, you'd just buy some brighter bulbs. Unfortunately
because of the high energy usage, incandescent bulbs greater than 39 watts
have been banned, discontinued or just difficult to find.
Š They dim from 0-100% evenly and with no flickering.
Š Color is achieved by coating the glass, so most colors are available. The color
quality looks the same the first day it turns on to the moment it burns out.
Š The life span is short - an average of about 1,200 hours - but the light comes
on as soon as you press the switch.
Š Incandescent lighting is high voltage and needs to be wired by an electrician,
although no other parts are needed for installation.
HALOGEN

See incandescent, however, there is currently no ban on halogen lighting. Regarding heat, it's more than just hot, as everyone knows who has changed one.

TOP The LED Delsey Col-

lection from ELAN includes
this five-light linear pendant
cluster, which is available in
champagne gold (shown) or
polished nickel.
ABOVE The Possini Euro Prexa
LED Bath Bar from LAMPS
PLUS features glass and
brushed nickel for an industrial
yet modern look.

FLUORESCENT/COMPACT FLUORESCENT

The soul-crushing lights of education. For a long time, this was the only other
option to incandescent, so to save a lot of energy in businesses, places like
schools that needed the lights on all the time specified this type of lighting.
Š They offer little to no dimming capabilities or colors.
Š The color quality will degrade over time - at times before the bulb even fails.
Š These types of lights use a medium amount of power and heat and offer a
medium life span - an average of 24,000 to 30,000 hours.

Š They can take a few seconds to turn on fully and then sometimes longer to
achieve the full output.

Š Their high-voltage needs require an electrician to wire them, and other parts
needed for installation include a ballast to convert to the voltage needed
for fluorescents.
LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE (LED)

You can have it all with LEDs,and you can have it today, but it is a 100-year-old
newer technology than the other light sources we have previously used. The issues are not with the LEDs,they are with us.We expect to use high-voltage techniques on low-voltage lights and wonder why it doesn't work well. We should
be surprised it works at all. But if we use modern techniques on modern lights,
we can get results that far surpass the older lighting methods. Here are some
things to think about when it comes to choosing LEDs for your project needs.
ŠThey aren't dimmable? But it says so on the box! No LED is dimmable -
the element can be either on or off but not in the middle. This is why even
when using a brand-name, high-voltage dimmer and good-quality LED

light, there are still flickering, hums and poor or
no dimming. Using a low-voltage PWM dimmer installed down the line (after) the transformer is the way to ensure great results. If the
light is on less time, there is less output. Don't
worry, this happens faster than we can see.
ŠA transformer is the part that converts high
voltage (120v AC) to low voltage (12-24v DC),
which most LEDs use. The transformer is not
going to last as long as the LED, so use a fixture/
bulb that has a removable transformer. They
range from the size of your smartphone to a
shoe box for an entire project, and I like to add
a second for backup. Also, it does not need to be
installed inside the light (or the ceiling.) If you
put it there, the transformer will get hot and
have a much shorter life span.
ŠRGB only? No white? Correct, there are only
red, green and blue LEDs. We've had red and
green for decades (remember your tape deck
or VCR from the 1970s?). Blue came MUCH
later. If you combine red, green and blue, you
get WHITE! But how you mix the colors
determines what "temperature" white you'll
get. So worry about color temperature later. If
wired and installed properly, you can adjust this
with software.
ŠLEDs have an average life span of 50,000 to
100,000 hours - sometimes even more.This is
because they use very little power. They typically use 10 percent or less of than that of an
incandescent bulb. They do change their color
quality over time (like fluorescents), but their
life is long, so it is not as obvious. You can also
retune your RGB levels to get the desired color
back. Depending on the system, this can be
done by the homeowner or a professional. ˜
