How to stay relevant among
o u r i n d u s t r y 's c h a l l e n g e s

AS DESIGN PROFESSIONALS, you are constantly
overcoming hurdles. Your clients insist they can
find a better deal by ordering products online instead of trusting your judgment, and although you
offer great incentives to work at your firm, you
can't seem to acquire just the right talent for your
growing business. Mix in the growing uncertainty
over the tariff situation, as well as asking the ageold question - are we in a recession or not? - and
you might want to throw in the towel and find
another career.
All industries go through their own growing
pains. But instead of sitting around and complaining and losing your foothold, the best thing to do
is identify your issues and figure out how you can
come up with solutions.The residential kitchen and
bath design and construction industry is competitive, and everyone needs to set themselves apart.
KBB spoke with several pros on a variety of pertinent issues affecting them today, including the
need to better promote the design professional, the
unrealistic expectations that come from watching
reality shows, the best ways to market yourself and
your company and the bane of our entire industry
- the skilled labor shortage.

INTENSIFYING UNREALISTIC
CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

A huge culprit of this particular industry challenge
is the TV design show that makes it look like a
homeowner underwent a budget-friendly renovation in an extremely limited amount of time with
minimal headaches.
Viewers see a bathroom project with a certain
price tag that does not take into consideration
that some of the products were donated for free in
return for brand recognition. A kitchen overhaul
was completed in four days, but a fast turnaround
like that can compromise on quality. Much of what
we see in these design shows is postproduction.
"Renovation shows are a lot of fun to watch,
but people need to understand that it is not easy
to execute these projects," said Cecilia Pacheco of
Kingwood,Texas-based Cecilia Pacheco Interior
Design."The majority do not realize that they entail a lot of time, planning and attention to detail."

She added that it would be much more helpful for designers and clients
if these types of shows could more realistically portray how much time goes
into a successful renovation.
"Design shows can provide a distorted view and only show half of the
story,"said Michele Goldman, showroom experience manager for Portland,
Ind.-based Pennville Custom Cabinetry. "Viewers do not understand what
goes on behind the scenes; things can evolve over time."
