MANEUVERING THE LABOR SHORTAGE

One thing we know for sure: Successful projects cannot be completed
without qualified and trained personnel. When companies try to take on
more work with less people, the result can be substandard.
"As a designer and a kitchen and bath remodeler, I cannot complete my job
without the right team to execute the design," said Patti Johnson, owner of
Lebanon, Ohio-based Patti Johnson Interiors."We all like to keep our pipelines full, but we are getting really backed up. People tend to wait until they
are ready to start the work before contacting a designer or contractor, only to
hear we're a few or even several months out."
One solution to this growing issue is to provide more educational resources
on both a local and national basis, as our industry requires workers with
knowledge and experience.
"Employers have to pay more than they have in the past and offer benefits," added Pacheco, who explained that we need more companies like
CertainTeed, which trains people in the construction industry through
YouthBuild USA.
Because of the mass message of the importance of obtaining a college
degree, less youths are entering a skilled trades program, so the industry needs
to address this issue.
"We need a grassroots movement of designers educating about the importance of such things as cabinet work and lighting design," said Colin
O'Neill, owner of Hudson, N.H.-based Kitchen and Bath 101, a company
that provides 2020 freelance design and coaching services. "They have to be
caught early before the 'my kid(s) have to go to a $40K per year college' kicks
in.There needs to be a movement that lets people know there is no shame in
entering the trades."
According to Goldman, Europe has several apprenticeship programs
offered during the high school years for students to learn a trade and
become skilled.

"I wish we had that mentality here in the U.S. -
a resurgence of the maker community - be proud
of what you make," she added.
Bill Feinberg, president of Fort Lauderdale,
Fla.-based Allied Kitchen & Bath, says his firm
has gone outside of the industry to look for qualified candidates they can train.
"There is a great opportunity to work in an exciting field of design and remodeling that is both
challenging and rewarding with the ability to earn
a great living - often above six figures for talented
designers," he added.
Allied is working with the local chamber of
commerce and colleges to find a solution to the
labor shortage. In September, they went to the
nation's capital with 75 top local business owners, community leaders and city officials to meet
with members of congress, federal government
administrators and other policy makers to share
concerns on important issues, including the lack
of talent and shortage of workers.
"We need to change the way people look at our
industry, as well as how our local schools teach
our children about the opportunities available in
construction," said Feinberg. "We need local colleges and trade schools to offer more and better
programs and allow for grants to help pay for this
training. If we don't find a way to train workers for
our industry, we will be in big trouble in just a few
short years."

