A designer turns her dysfunctional kitchen
into a mid-century-inspired family space

WHEN JULIE LAMPE AND HER HUSBAND bought their home, they knew they
wanted a multi-functional kitchen that could suit both casual family meals
and elegant dinner parties. However, the original space needed a lot of love
before it could meet their standards.
"There were so many problems with this kitchen, I am not sure you could
call it a design," said Lampe, who is the owner and lead designer of Winter
Park, Fla.-based Paradigm Interiors. "Our top priority was first creating
a functional kitchen, and then we knew we wanted something that wasn't
too casual and yet would still be very comfortable."

FROM MESS TO MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACE

The problems in the existing kitchen ranged from limited storage to dangerous discoveries, like the exposed gas line and a lack of ventilation for the range.
There was also no counter space or cabinetry on the wall where the range
and refrigerator were and zero pantry space. While there were five total base
cabinets, only three could be used for storage because one was a sink base,
and the other was a trash pull-out.
"Of the remaining three was a small corner cabinet with a lazy Susan,
which functioned poorly," said Lampe. "I've never been a fan of the lazy
Susan, and the months I spent using that one validated my feelings!"
The family needed an in-kitchen, cabinet-style pantry, since there was
not enough room for a walk-in, and they wanted a space that could seat

husband saved on the budget by doing the demolitions
and carpentry work themselves. Other cost-eﬀective
choices included the quartz
countertops and the midrange appliances.
"We acted as our own general
contractors, and thankfully this
project was on budget and
on time - even with a few hiccups. However, it could have
been a disaster if we didn't
know what we were doing,"
said the designer.

and storage for board games were high on the
list of entertaining needs. Space for circulating
was necessary since the bedrooms are only accessible through the kitchen area. In addition,
this thoroughfare needed to be wide enough to
accommodate the family's eldest daughter, who
uses a wheelchair.
LAYOUT CHANGES

The biggest change in the floor plan was incorporating the dining room into the kitchen. Before
the remodel, there was seating for three at the
peninsula, and the family room was on the opposite side. Instead, the designer had a custom booth
seat made for the back of the peninsula.This forms
part of the seating for the dining table and helps
merge these spaces.
"One thing that I realized about putting the
booth there was that we would not be able to
serve food from the peninsula because we would
not be able to access the booth side," said the
designer, who used Chief Architect for her plans.
"This actually gave the new bar a dual purpose."
