CHALLENGE 3 - CREATIVE VENTING
The demolition surprises did not end with the
flooring. Once the old cabinets had been taken
down,Lutz realized that the hood ventilation ductwork had an unexpected trajectory.Instead of going
straight up through the roof, it went to the ceiling,
turned 90 degrees to the right for a few feet, then
turned up again to finally go through the ceiling.
The vent had been encased in a soffit,and there had
been extravagant millwork above the original hood.
It was all totally concealed, but unfortunately,
the replacement hood and cabinets were already
in production by the time the issue was found. Deciding that the builders would not have installed
the vent in that manner if they had not had a good
reason to do so because turns in a vent reduce efficiency, Lutz opted to leave the angled venting.
That meant he needed to come up with a clever
solution to hide the ducts.
He made a custom box extension from the
hood on the right to cover the transition. To
achieve a balanced look, he duplicated the box on
the left side. Constructing the boxes and finding
paint to exactly match the color of the hood took
a couple of days, but the solution looks more like
extra molding than duct housing.
By incorporating a variety of functional features, including raised dishwashers, a cutlery organizer, a pullout spice rack and extra-deep cabinets,
Lutz made sure the kitchen offers solutions the
homeowners can see and enjoy, too.
