cabinets with black doors and

the kitchen was also modified to match the other
arched doorways, and an undercounter microwave
was installed for ease of use.
GETTING CREATIVE WITH A TREND

For the appeal the clients wanted, the team started
with typical attributes of farmhouse style: white
finishes, articulating arm wall sconces and simple
Shaker doors with slight furniture detailing. This
already would be a far cry from the original heavy,
chocolate brown cabinetry and dated lighting.
From there, they worked to instill Euro-style details that would give the kitchen its own definition
of the modern farmhouse.
The typical open shelves were replaced with
European cube shelving on the left of the sink.
Instead of the classic, single-height, square and
polished countertops, a thick, mitered edge countertop and a secondary overhang for eating was
introduced. Exposed - rather than hidden - sidemounted LED channel lights in the hutch were
done in European frameless cabinets. Mattecharcoal laminate doors were used in some of the

inset base cabinets instead of all white cabinets, and angular-shaped, "picket
fence" backsplash tiles were used in the place of subway tiles.
"We felt like these might be details found in a European kitchen, if they
were to do a farmhouse style," said Brenda.
Black quartz countertops around the perimeter instead of the original tan
granite were chosen for ease of maintenance and contrast against the white
cabinets and the white quartz island countertops. The cantilevered island
countertop adds a third layer of color with a jeweled and accented gray quartz.
"The level of details in this design required careful planning and care,"
said Robert. "From the fitted cube shelving with integrated lighting to the
cantilevered island overhang, this project demanded special attention and
merging of skill sets."


The most impactful change in
the layout came from deleting
the peninsula in favor of a
more updated, open-ended
plan that allowed for a longer
island with seating on both
sides of the end corner.
