Despite schedule & budget
conflicts, a designer creates
her very own sanctuary

S A HOMEOWNER, an affordable move is to purchase a builder-basic home and renovate over time
as the budget allows.This is exactly what designer
Veronica Solomon has done with the house she
purchased in Katy, Texas, a few years ago. She
started with the kitchen, and then when she was
already renovating her bedroom as part of a One
Room Challenge, she decided to move forward
with her master bath as well.
"When I am working on a project in my own
home, I like to be a bit dramatic so clients can see
my range," said Solomon, CEO and principal
designer at Casa Vilora Interiors. "Clients may
not want me to go that bold until they see how
well it can work."
Because of her busy schedule with limited vacation time, she wanted her master bath to be a relaxing escape away from work. She enjoys mixing
patterns, so although there is limited use of textiles
in a bathroom, Solomon was able to mix materials
to illustrate the same concept.
MASTER BATH MASTERY
The previous layout was not practical; the designer
did not need two sinks in one area, and the toilet
room took up too much space.To achieve the look
of a welcoming hotel bathroom,she wanted to make
the freestanding tub a focal point.She also swapped
the locations of the shower and vanity areas.
The bold, geometric marble flooring in the
overall bathroom space is showcased through to
the curbless shower and was also used for the sizable shower bench. Solomon originally saw the tile
in a show house designed by a colleague and knew
she wanted to use it in her own bathroom. She
chose the wallpaper to complement the marble,
which she said was the impetus for all the other
colors in the bathroom. Book-matched porcelain slabs for shower walls provide durability and
luxury - as well as no grout lines.
For the vanity, Solomon wanted to design
something you wouldn't see every day. She
sketched it out on paper, showed it to her cabinet
maker, and he built it on site.
"I had wanted to use a walnut finish somewhere
in the bathroom for its warmth and natural element, so I chose it for the vanity," said the designer. "You can see the floor tile running under
the floating-style unit, and the walnut juxtaposes
the black and white. The porcelain countertop
extends into a 10-in. backsplash for added drama."
