Sinks were designed to minimize splashing, and there used to be a separate "tooth sink" or cuspidor, for spitting after brushing teeth. This was an
alternative to expectorating into a sink where the user then washes hands,
and everything that they just spit into the sink splashes back up on them. He
predicted that residential product design will become more like hospitals
- easily washed, touch-free taps and wall-mounted toilets to easily clean
beneath and behind the fixture.

"Emotionally, at a time when a lot of us feel
we don't have a lot of control, this is one place we
do have some," she said, "and as industry professionals, we are going to be asked to install those
functional elements that also help our clients
emotionally."

Turning to the kitchen, Casey said some of the key design functions that are
spotlighted by the COVID-19 crisis include flexibility in the space, having
multiple users and multiple generations working together, a focus on hygiene
and maximized storage. She said people are re-thinking the open floor plan,
since there's a new demand for a home office, homework stations for children,
an area for older family members, gym spaces, etc., so containing the kitchen
is going to become more prevalent.
"Sanitation is key," she echoed, "with touchless elements like faucets and
garbage disposal units, anti-bacterial surfaces, non-porous materials, moldresistant drywall and copper hardware and elimination of materials that
might retain bacteria. Another example is the installation of an instant
hot-water supply to speed up cooking and cleaning counters, as well as
motion-sensor lighting controls and touchless hardware that opens drawers
and cabinet doors."
Storage is also important - not just to organize more pantry items since
there are fewer trips to the supermarket but also to impose order and a
sense of serenity.
