Surfaces That Make
an Impact Today
The need for nature-inspired looks,
cleanliness and a sense of personality
inspire current material choices

URFACE MATERIALS - COUNTERTOPS, FLOORS, BACKSPLASHES AND WALLS

- can be the perfect place to add that pop of personality clients
want. But because of recent events, clients are also asking for these
often-touched areas to be hygienic. Manufacturers have responded
quickly to bring both character and cleanliness together in all kinds
of surface materials.

DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM CURRENT NEEDS

"Cleanability is now more important to consumers than ever," said Katie
Michael-Battaglia, design director, Nemo Tile + Stone. "The question
of 'how easy is it to clean,' is now, 'how thoroughly can it be cleaned
and disinfected?'"
Certain surface materials can be more comprehensively cleaned than others. Michael-Battaglia says that porcelain is so dense, it's almost impenetrable
to water and bacteria and therefore does not allow moisture and germs to
build up and is easy to wipe down. Other materials that are non-porous - a
feature essential for hygienic surfaces - include quartz, solid surfaces, certain
types of laminate and granite with proper sealant. Ceramic tile is another
versatile, naturally hygienic material that resists contamination.
"There are minerals that can be added to the ceramic tile glaze that act as
catalysts with simple light waves - either full-spectrum UV from the sun, or
some even work with indoor light sources - to break down carbon-nitrogen
bonds and work as anti-microbial surfaces,"explained Ryan Fasan, technical
consultant, Tile of Spain USA.
Going forward, it is likely these types of antibacterial properties may be
required in all kinds of surfaces, whether they are applied through glazes,
finishes or internal minerals.
HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS CHANGED SURFACE TRENDS - AND HASN'T

At the beginning of this year, forecasts showed that consumers were leaning toward bold but nature-inspired colors and hues that felt personal but
also soothing. This outlook has continued and has even grown because of
COVID-19.
"I sense more organic forms and colors from nature will become prevalent,
as we all are looking longingly at the outside world and wishing we were
there," said Cean Irminger, creative director at New Ravenna.
This trend in naturally inspired surfaces does not necessarily mean colors
and patterns will be subtle. According to Alan Kemp, head of brand marketing at Graham & Brown, the popularity of rich tones shows no signs of
fading.
"Deep greens and blues have become more prevalent, and these colors
can then be accented with pastel shades of pink and soft gray," said Kemp.
He also added that since many kitchens are leading to outside spaces - and
more will do so in the future because of the pandemic - there is a demand
for tropical prints to add greenery and blur the lines between the outside and
