inside. These bold patterns could work well with
the white kitchen - a look that might grow again
after this year.
"Lighter colors and the white kitchen tend to
make people think 'clean,'"said Lindsey Waldrep,
Crossville's vice president of marketing."I wonder
if a reaction to COVID-19 will be a return to
the clean, sterile-looking kitchens of years past.
I hope not."
Waldrep explained that since color choice does
not affect the performance of a surface material,
designers should continue to encourage clients to go
bold with darker and more colorful materials with
hygienic properties.Consumers have shown a preference for these pops of personality in their spaces,
and the need for a touch of joy and interest is high.
"I think homeowners are going to be more willing to take color and bold pattern risks with their
surfaces,"said Summer Kath, Cambria's executive
vice president of design and business development. "Homes are more important today than
ever, and I think people are ready to express their
personal style in a big way."
A VARIETY OF FINISHES

While bolder colors and patterns are trending, finishes for larger surfaces are becoming more subtle
and soft to reflect nature and create a balancing
sense of calm.

variation with a glossy white
dash across the tile's body.
The plain tiles in the collection
retail for $7.98 per square

"Lower sheens will continue to influence materials, as they appear more organic and natural and
less shiny and hard," said Gwen Petter, Wilsonart
director of design. "They bring softness to the eye
and a less 'processed' look that implies comfort."
Non-reflective, matte finishes are becoming more popular in both kitchens and bathrooms. Full slabs - which eliminate cleaning
issues with grout and can add drama - are the
material of choice for both shower and tub
surrounds, as well as kitchen countertops and
full-height backsplashes.
Contrasting these large, matte slabs are
smaller tiles that can bring personality to a space.
Mixed and brushed metals are popular accents
in backsplashes, while traditional terrazzo in a
small format is making a comeback for floors.
Against the soft, matte slabs, these smaller tiles
in a variety of finish options introduce character
to the space.
"Finish is another opportunity to add layers, especially when we're keeping our palette
more homogeneous," said Fasan. "We are seeing
multiple finishes ranging from mirrored gloss
through satin to matte and even hyper-matte or
chalked finishes."
These finishes play off other materials in the
space like plumbing and lighting fixtures, fabrics
and wall coverings.
