protect you if the industry is devastated because of a recession, pandemic or
whatever. A lot of times, as designers, we get tunnel vision, but if you think
outside the box about what you bring to the table, I am sure you will find you
have a lot of services you can offer to more than one audience. The virtual
world we live in today allows us to be visible anywhere in the world and share
what we do, and that is valuable.

When our showrooms closed due to local COVID-19 mandates,we had to make
the quick transition from in-person showroom appointments to virtual appointments.The ability to speak to a showroom expert virtually has helped our customers - both trade professionals and homeowners - continue projects at this time.
We've found that many of our customers have been having a difficult
time navigating the executive orders of the areas we service, which in my
case would be the Tri-State area. While we don't provide legal interpretation of these orders, we are able to direct our customers to helpful resources.
One example would be in Pennsylvania where many of our customers were
unaware of the state waiver application. Once they were made aware of it,
filed the application and were approved, they were able to take their projects
through to completion. In New Jersey, Executive Order 122 allowed essential
construction to continue, and our team was able to guide our customers to the
New Jersey Builders Association and Shore Builders Association of Central
New Jersey for interpretation. Being able to better understand local guidelines
significantly improved the contractors' ability to work.
His Advice: Continue to think creatively about ways you can support your
customers during this time. Also, as the building and construction industry
gets up and running across the country, we should all continue to follow the
local, CDC and WHO guidelines relevant to COVID-19 to keep everyone
safe in our showrooms, warehouses and job sites.

I am considering adding e-design to my list of services, and I am also working on getting my mentoring business up and running. In terms of keeping
in touch with my clients, I send flowers, wine or cards to eight of them per
month, and I always get a response. All I want is for them to remember me.
This has been very successful, and I have a higher rate of return on my money.
It does take a bit more time, but the results are worth it.
Her Advice: During financial hardships, don't scrimp on marketing.

Because of the safer-at-home and social-distancing orders, presenting finish
selections to a client has become more of a challenge. Our solution has been
to prepare a labelled package of sample selections to send to them ahead of
our presentation meeting.We now meet with our clients via video conference
and review the materials with them in a PowerPoint presentation.This allows
us to demonstrate the placement and installation of each item, while at the
same time the client can touch and see the actual sample.
Following social distancing to ensure a safe working environment has
caused move-in extensions. As a project nears completion, the activity
level at the house tends to ramp up with various trades on site. To reduce
the numbers, we have to space out the site visits over more time, causing
extensions to completion dates. Everyone is committed to the importance
of the social-distancing measures, and through thoughtful communication
and planning we keep everyone informed.

