BALANCED BUDGET
The Fresh Farmhouse
THE OWNERS OF A 1980S-DATED HOME in the Pacific Northwest were looking
for the opposite of what they currently had: a tiny, dark and closed-off kitchen
lacking in prep space and storage. They hired designers Yulia Piterkina and
Helen Rosin of Woodinville, Wash.-based Ulle Studio to help realize their
dream kitchen, with the catch of working with a strict budget.
RECONSTRUCTING THE LAYOUT
The clients, a family of four, were looking for a fresh and modern farmhouse
appeal in their current space with plenty of functionality and light.They had
also recently replaced two windows and a patio door and did not want to
reinvest in changing those.
"We needed to make sure the layout worked with the existing openings,"
said Piterkina, who used AutoCAD and SketchUp to complete this project.
"Our clients were also on a tight budget, so we had to plan the space carefully."
The goal of the new floor plan was to reconfigure the kitchen so that it
made the most use of the space available, while providing the clients with
plenty of work surfaces and storage for all their needs.They also wanted room
for a bigger pantry and space to store all the small appliances.
The design team first opened up the walls separating the kitchen from
the dining and living areas and raised the ceiling. The fridge and stove were
relocated as well, ultimately creating a much longer and more open space
with which to work. A large island with a cooktop and storage on either side
is situated in the middle.

"The layout of the kitchen was a challenge; we
had to browse through at least five different versions and were able to narrow it down to two options, one of which our clients chose in the end,"
said the designer. "For us, we love stepping up to
the challenge, and that was one of the things we
loved most about this project."
