ODAY'S HOME MEANS MORE than it used to - ours are now doubling as
gyms, theaters, offices and schools, as well as sanctuaries. Consumers
are spending much more time in their houses than originally anticipated in January 2020, when smart home tech was just on a gradual
uptick. Now technology is exploding in popularity and providing
solutions for the consumer looking for a better, healthier experience
without leaving their front door.

ENHANCING HEALTH WITH SMART ENVIRONMENTS

The circadian rhythm, which is the body's internal "clock"set by the rising and
setting of the sun, is often damaged while indoors without access to enough
natural light. A homeowner might find themselves unable to fall asleep or to
feel energized during the day because they are not getting the right amount
of light at the correct time for their personal schedule. This is where smart
environments come in.
Smart lighting - which is most effectively set with a whole-home integration system - can manipulate indoor lighting to help homeowners feel
tired when they want to with dimmer, warmer light and feel energized with
brighter light. This can be used to encourage a healthier work/life balance,
particularly when working from home.
"It can be difficult to remember to take breaks when working from a home
office," said Jeffrey Singer, executive director, residential market, Crestron.
"With a smart home, homeowners can schedule the lights in their home
office to shut or briefly flash, signaling that it's time to take a break. As they
walk into the kitchen, the room is already lit and then will dim when the
lunch break is over."

A smart environment does not end with lighting; instead homeowners can set a scene for the
ideal atmosphere for work, play or relaxation. Presetting the right lighting, temperature and music
for an evening in can make a space feel separate
and different, especially if everyone has been at
home all day, or it can set the stage for the ideal
home-school environment. Scenes are personalized by the homeowner and feature the optimal
settings for their needs and comfort.
"The challenge of transforming light in the
home to support productivity at all hours of the
day has pushed many consumers to explore the
benefits of smart technology,"said Scott Stephenson, director of product management, motorization, Hunter Douglas. "Especially in high-traffic
rooms like the bathroom or kitchen, technology
can support wellness by properly lighting the space
and regulating temperature to promote comfort."

Technology is also providing solutions to sanitary
problems. As homeowners become increasingly
concerned with infectious diseases and germs in
general, the demand for products that enhance
cleanliness has increased. These problem-solving
products are often touchless.
"We have already seen an increased demand
for smart products that reduce touch points,"
said Stephany Osma, associate manager of PR
and social media for Grohe, LIXIL Americas,
who added that "touchless" is the number-one
search term on Grohe's website."This demand for
limiting or eliminating touch points in both the
kitchen and bathroom will change the industry's
approach to the smart home."
