A master bath is gutted to reflect
a new style and refreshing updates

N OLDER COUPLE in Corinth, Texas, wanted to renovate several bath-

rooms in their home, which included the master.They turned to owners and designers Jeremy and Kelley Irwin of Irwin Construction, as
they had worked with the clients many times - beginning with the
kitchen a few years ago.
The main goal with this master bath project was to create a farmhouse look while still staying true to the overall architecture and design of
the rest of the home. Cohesion with the other areas was important, so Kelley
decided to create a farmhouse/traditional blend.

OUT WITH THE OLD

Although the former space was a decent size, and they did not have to change
the square footage, it was broken up into dysfunctional, outdated areas and
needed to be completely demoed.The designer described the original shower,
which the clients used daily, as a small hole in the wall. The linen closet
blocked it, and a huge, sunken tub took up a third of the space.The bathroom
was also drab and dated with its builder-grade light fixtures and cabinets.
"The master bath was the last place that needed an overhaul in this home,"
said Kelley."Our clients wanted to do the renovations in phases, so they were
not out of a living space for too long."
Taking out the linen cabinet added 10 inches to the shower, which the
designer said made a huge difference in how much larger and open it feels.
She replaced the bulky tub with a freestanding unit, which takes up less space.

"One of our goals was to give
the bathroom a striking focal
point, which we did with the
freestanding tub, arched window and board and batten,"
said Kelley. "This makes the
space feel larger and generally
updates the design to coordinate with other areas of the
home that we've renovated."

MIXING STYLES

The overall home is what the designer describes
as "stately and traditional,"but the clients also love
the look of farmhouse design.
"However, erring too far on the side of shabby
chic or rustic would result in a bathroom that
didn't flow with the rest of the home," she added.
"Instead, we focused on timeless elegance with
hints of farmhouse style."
Although her clients love subway tile, Kelley
said they chose a handmade look in a creamier white hue for a more elegant vibe for the
shower walls.
"She contemplated shiplap - a farmhouse staple
- but we decided that board and batten carpentry
around the bathtub area was still a great way to
add some extra texture while staying a bit truer
to the traditional style of the house," explained
the designer.
