The Pandemic Pivot

IN JANUARY 2020 - in a pre-pandemic U.S. - the NKBA teamed up with
BridgeYear to bring a unique career exploration model to high schools across
the country by launching the BridgeYear/NKBA Career Tour. Its mission
is to expose high school students to skills-based education pathways and
high-demand employment opportunities in the kitchen and bath industry
through in-person, hands-on activities.
Through simulations in finish carpentry, installation, kitchen and bath
design, plumbing, electrical and showroom sales, students were active participants in " trying on " various kitchen and bath careers. They also gained
valuable insight into potential pathways they could pursue after graduation
to capitalize on opportunities in the field. 
Nearly 6,000 Houston-area students got the chance to " test drive " lucrative
design and construction careers between January and March this year. About
half of the students surveyed said they were highly receptive to at least one of
the skilled trades following the career tour experience.

ACCOMMODATING CHANGE

It seemed like the perfect platform to connect students to tangible, entry-level
career opportunities and, in turn, help fill the hundreds of thousands of design
and construction jobs that go unfilled each month in the U.S. But since the
COVID-19 outbreak has eliminated, restricted or greatly reduced in-person
learning, NKBA and BridgeYear needed to pivot.
" The need is still there - even greater than it was - for skilled-trade professionals to support the demand for new and remodeled kitchens and bathrooms, " said Bill Darcy, NKBA CEO. " We need to keep filling that pipeline
with an approach that retains the magic of the hands-on experience. "
NKBA and BridgeYear adapted their in-person Career Tour programming
into new Career Test Drive Kits: a flexible, socially distant alternative. Just like
Career Test Drive Fairs, Career Kits offer interactive simulations that immerse
students in the world of each profession while maintaining a hands-on model. 
The Career Kits' portable, 90-minute experience was designed specifically
for students at home or in small group settings. Schools place orders for kits to

offer their students an engaging career exploration
experience. BridgeYear and NKBA adapted three
previously in-person career simulations to align with
the new box kit experience: Kitchen and Bath Designer,Finish Carpenter and Electrician.Accessible
by phone or laptop,Career Kits include fun,TikTokinspired instructional videos with a personable " selfie
mockumentary " style that allow students to learn
alongside near-peers, as opposed to being lectured.
All materials required for each simulation are
included with the kit. In the Kitchen and Bath
Design Career Kits, students " try on " the career
by creating a profile and bubble diagram for a fictional client's future kitchen; designing a kitchen
layout with guidance from NKBA guidelines;
and preparing a design presentation for a " client "
that shows a student's layout and style inspiration.
For the Finish Carpenter Career Kit, students
learn how to install board-and-batten-style wainscoting according to a predetermined design. Students are also given the opportunity to design and
install their own wainscoting with the option of
using different angles beyond 90 degrees.
The Electrician Career Kit will allow students
to create a simple, closed electrical circuit to turn
on a light bulb, then add an interrupter to the
circuit by installing a light fixture. Students also
build a circuit with two light switches that can
independently control one light.
" We are actively reaching out to NKBA members to help us support these students through virtual mentoring on the completion of their Career
Test Drive, " said Darcy, adding that a new NKBA
NextUp toolkit for chapters was developed to
help members navigate the new normal in terms
of reaching the next generation of talent. " We're
excited to have a solution to keep recruiting and
empowering a well-prepared workforce for the
design and construction industry. "
NKBA and BridgeYear will pilot the Career Test
Drive Kits during the 2020-2021 school year, with
250 kits slated to reach students in late November.
