DESIGN WITH
Better Together
A couple of industry pros complete a major
renovation through efficiency and organization
WHEN ROSE OTT AND HER HUSBAND bought a ranch home for their large
family in Long Beach, N.Y., they knew they wanted to add a master suite,
create an open-concept kitchen and upgrade various systems. Rose is an
AKBD-certified designer with Rose Ott Design, and her husband Frank is
a contractor and owner of Frank J. & Sons.Together, the two of them created
the forever home of their dreams for themselves and their three children.

The designer chose a white
subway tile for the kitchen
backsplash to quietly coordinate with the more colorful
countertops. The shiplap
hood - featuring a tapered
design - provides a subtle
contrast to the white cabinets.
WORKING AS A TEAM
" We are both Type A personalities; we own our own businesses and are very
efficient, " said Rose. " We were respectful of what each other wanted and
made it happen. "
The couple finished the extensive project in just four months, thanks to the
elimination of indecisive clients with whom they sometimes have to work.
Rose also created a detailed spec book of every item selected, finishes and
dimensions for all the tradespeople to reference, so nothing was overlooked
and there was little margin for error.

" Frank and I agreed on almost everything, " said
the designer, " but if one of us was more passionate
about a design element or product, we let the other
person have it. In terms of product selection, I get
to see what is out there as a designer, and I knew
exactly what I wanted. "
In the kitchen, Rose and her husband desired
a light, bright space with plenty of room for the
whole family to gather. At the top of Frank's list
was radiant heated flooring throughout the home,
as well as floor-to-ceiling tile in the master bath.
In the bathroom, Rose wanted a separate water
closet, which she says is good for a happy marriage,
as well as a decadent soaking tub.
" There were a lot of things I just gave a Hail
Mary pass to and trusted Rose with those decisions, " said Frank, who explained that he wanted
mahogany floors, but his wife chose quartersawn white oak, which he says looks great.
" When it comes to design, I tend to pick things
we've had in the past, but she likes to change
things up a bit. "
