It was a challenge to replace
the floors throughout, since
the team was not remodeling
every room in the condo.
They worked to strategically
rearrange the furniture so the
homeowners did not have to
put everything in storage.
" The island has a large cabinet for pots and pans, a pullout trash bin and
even a 15-in. wine fridge, " said Zaveloff, adding that the island's furniture
base and wainscot end panels make it feel bigger than it actually is.
The island is not the only place she included high-functioning storage
- how every piece of cabinetry was going to be used was thought through.
There is a dedicated pots-and-pans cabinet, a rollout trash cabinet and
drawers designed for cutlery. There is also a single cabinet designed
specifically for pantry items with tray dividers and rollouts, which encourages storing all the food in one central place rather than scattered
throughout the cabinetry.
" Small kitchens make you really think about how you use every
cabinet, " said Zaveloff. " This kitchen is like a kitchen on a boat - very
compact but functional. "
CREATING THE ILLUSION OF A BIGGER SPACE
Even with an efficient floor plan and storage, the kitchen was still undeniably small. It would take careful placement of finishes and colors to make
it appear larger than it actually was.
" Trying not to mix too many finishes or materials can help make a
space feel bigger, " said Zaveloff. " It also helps to choose colors that keep
it clean and modern. "
To do this, she selected a classic black-and-white palette, complete
with classic white perimeter cabinetry and white subway tile with white
grout. Marble-look porcelain was chosen for its white, clean look and
low-maintenance appeal. Contrasting the mainly white perimeter is the
island base, which is a dark charcoal.
" While warm whites make the space look bigger, the black island
grounds the center of the room, " said the designer, explaining that most
of the appliances are integrated into the white cabinetry to contribute
to the visual expansiveness of the space.
Brass is used to add warmth to the kitchen, particularly in the base of
the two pendants above the island and the main fixture above the sink,
as well as in the hardware and the kitchen stool legs. The ripples in the
island pendants introduce a hint of texture to the kitchen, while the new
white oak, wide-plank floors add another layer of warmth.
" The floors really make the space feel airier, and I love the crisp black,
white and brass palette, " said Zaveloff. " It just goes to show you can get
a lot of bang for your buck in a small space with the right finishes. "
