cables), which can include tearing
down walls and even ripping up the
parking lot for underground updates.
If you are purchasing a new building
for your franchise, ask upfront what
infrastructure is currently installed
so you are aware in advance what the
extent of updates will entail.
Outside of the physical installation
requirements, there's even more to
consider to ensure your franchise
communications are properly set
up. This includes understanding
which carriers provide the best levels of service for your franchise and
what equipment you'll need to keep
employees connected to both you
and your customers. A wrong decision here can be costly - overage fees
and equipment replacements aren't
cheap, and not being able to properly
communicate internally or externally
can hurt the bottom line.
Not only is a wrong decision costly,
but not having these connections set
up is a huge disadvantage for businesses. For retailers, it can be the
difference between having inventory
available along with a secure point of
sales (POS) system set up for transactions and not being able to even open
your business doors. For restaurants,
it can mean that potential customers
are unable to connect for a reservation or deliveries are not completed
on time.

Mobility is no longer an option for

necessary. Even if your franchise
does not require employees to be on
the move as part of their job descriptions, it's important that they are still
connected at all times. Even more importantly, if your employees work out
in the field, you have to ensure constant connectivity.
For example, home caregivers need
to have access to both outbound and
inbound communications to ensure
that they can share details on a patient's status and receive updates on
future appointments, no matter if the
caregiver is in a city or a rural area.
Devices that can only access specific
applications can keep your employees
focused, secure and efficient.
A major expectation, especially at
a restaurant or hospitality venue, is
access to free wireless for patrons and
guests. Just as setting up phone lines

requires upfront installation costs,
so typically does setting up Wi-Fi
systems. When reviewing carriers for
each franchise location, look for bundles that include wireless support and
offer enough capacity and speed to
support the expected number of patrons that will connect to the service.
As a bonus, many of these systems can
help you gather rich marketing data
on your customers, as well as target
specific advertisement to users while
on the property.
No franchise can be built overnight.
However, the franchises that take the
time to consider all parts of the process, including setting up internal
and external communication systems
properly, will be set up for long-term
success. As digital technology and
communications race forward, small
businesses need to keep up to remain
relevant to their customers.
