dren to pick them all up at one location. Some public
elementary school's buses have Kiddie Academy locations on their routes to transport older children to the
after-school programs there, while other academies have
their own buses.

In-house support
Kiddie Academy has Franchise Business Consultants
who are full-time Kiddie Academy employees. "The
Franchise Business Consultants work out of our operations department and are a liaison between the franchise
and the marketing, education and finance departments,"
Helwig explains. "They provide continuous support -
which extends to all the other departments we have - and
they facilitate conversations and get answers."
Additional departments include accounting, real estate, construction and technology. "These are all inhouse components of our offering that help support
franchisees, from the time they sign their initial franchise agreement and enter into site selection, all the way
through the term of our franchise agreement, which is
typically 15 years," Helwig says. "Every step of the way we
support them with each of those components in addition
to training."
Franchisee training and support is provided from the
company's corporate headquarters in Abingdon, Md. It
includes a week of intensive training at the headquarters and then ongoing training throughout the term of a
franchise agreement while the business is open and operational. Support also is provided at Kiddie Academy's
annual franchisee conference.
"Our employee-to-franchisee ratio is very favorable,"
Helwig maintains. "In most of the franchise industry,
the ratio of field consultants to franchisees could be one
consultant to 35 to 60 franchisees. In our model, it's more
like one consultant supporting 20 to 25 franchisees. So
we have a lot more resources available to franchisees in
terms of corporate employees to support them."
Each franchise has a 1.5-mile radius around its facility that will not have another Kiddie Academy, although
the typical distance between academies is often greater
than that. "We carefully consider the placement of each
Kiddie Academy location, looking at a variety of factors
like population density and commuting patterns, to
make sure we're optimally building out each marketplace," Helwig confirms. Childcare rates vary by market and are determined by the individual franchisees,
but for infants, it's typically from $375 to $400 weekly,

and for children two and three years old, rates are in the
low $300s weekly, although rates might escalate up to
$700 weekly in urban areas such as Cambridge, Mass.,
or Washington, D.C.

Most often, Kiddie Academy attracts husband-and-wife
teams for franchisees. Many franchisees are personally
facing the challenge of finding high-quality childcare,
which opens their eyes to the opportunity. A marketing or sales background is helpful, although Helwig says
Kiddie Academy has franchisees from all walks of life, including some with backgrounds in education.
"We had franchisees in for training last week for a new
site in Texas, one of which was a kindergarten teacher
in that market," Helwig relates. "She used to see Kiddie
Academy children coming in every fall, and she said that
she could tell within the first day which kids had gone to
Kiddie Academy because of how well-poised they were
socially and how well-prepared educationally. She was so
