	 Nyffeler's	 past	 professional	 experience	includes	working	in	business	development	 and	 sales	 capacities	 for	 companies	 including	 Black	 and	 Decker.	 While	
at	Black	and	Decker,	he	helped	launch	the	
DeWalt	tool	line.	From	there,	he	worked	
for	 a	 technology	 company	 as	 well	 as	 a	
franchise	support	organization,	he	says.

Nyffeler	has	applied	his	experience	with	
business	 development,	 technology	 and	
franchising	 to	 help	 Signal	 88	 Security	
grow	 from	 a	 single	 location	 in	 Omaha	
to	 326	 franchise	 territories	 domestically	 and	 internationally	 in	 less	 than	
10	 years.	 In	 addition	 to	 the	 location	
in	 Omaha,	 which	 is	 located	 within	 the	
headquarters	building,	the	company	has	
corporate-owned	sites	in	Phoenix,	Ariz.,	

and	 Lee's	 Summit,	 Mo.	 In	 addition	 to	
its	 franchises	 in	 the	 United	 States,	 the	
company	 supports	 franchises	 in	 Canada,	Australia	and	New	Zealand.
	 Signal	 88	 Security	 franchises	 provide	
security	 services	 for	 residential,	 commercial,	retail	and	institutional	customers.	Roughly	70	percent	of	the	franchise	
network's	 total	 business	 is	 made	 up	 of	
security	services	provided	to	multifamily	 apartment	 complexes.	 The	 remainder	of	the	business	comes	from	various	
security	 services	 provided	 at	 dedicated	
sites,	at	special	events	and	more.	
	 "There	 are	 a	 number	 of	 things	 that	
can	be	disruptive	to	someone's	desire	to	
want	to	live	in	an	apartment	complex,"	
Nyffeler	says,	citing	theft,	loitering	and	
drug	 activity	 as	 examples.	 "We	 want	 to	
provide	 the	 owners	 of	 these	 complexes	

the	support	they	need	to	convince	people	that	their	apartments	are	places	people	want	to	be.	The	first	place	someone	
wants	 peace	 of	 mind	 is	 at	 home,	 so	 we	
start	there."

Signal	88's	business	model	differs	from	
typical	 security	 providers,	 as	 the	 company's	officers	are	not	always	stationary.	
Instead	of	placing	an	officer	in	a	specific	
location,	 Signal	 88	 provides	 roving	 patrols,	which	cover	several	locations.	Clients	are	billed	for	the	time	officers	spend	
patrolling	their	properties,	instead	of	on	
an	 hourly	 basis.	 "We	 target	 locations	
that	 need	 service	 instead	 of	 placing	
someone	 at	 a	 desk,"	 Nyffeler	 says.	 "We	
believe	 having	 an	 officer	 on	 patrol	 in	 a	
fully	 branded	 vehicle	 is	 a	 strong	 deter-
