A franchise is considered successful if there is an increase in patients
and revenue. The AFC franchise model has become so successful over the
years, it continues to grow.
AFC plans to open 40 to 50 new facilities this year, both corporate and
franchised locations.
"We have doubled the number of
franchises," Irwin notes. "There were
about seven that needed to be closed
after the acquisition in 2013, so we
went down to 53 the first year and we
are now up to 93. There are 35 more
that are committed and in various
stages. We plan to open one about every 10 days."
Today, AFC is arguably the leading
urgent care operation in the country.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES
Irwin says AFC is a good franchising
opportunity because healthcare is a
strong part of the economy. "Healthcare is the second-largest employer
in the United States," he notes. "It's

a recession-proof business. During
the economic downturn, our business
grew greater than it ever had. We have
an aging population and there are
strong winds at the back for healthcare, urgent care and primary care."
AFC is unique in that franchising
at the provider level has never before
been done. The company also prides
itself on the potential earnings for

one of its franchises, which is three to
four times more than a food franchise
or other operation. "It is something
unique and the upside potential is
very strong," Irwin says.
Looking back on his decision, Irwin says he realizes he had the perfect
scenario for a healthcare franchise.
