FLEET MANAGEMENT

"The trucks don't put in a lot of miles, just a lot of hours. They don't travel far
because we have a perishable product." -Jeff Bonnema, VP of fleet management

For most delivery companies,
delay does not destroy the truck. But
for redi-mix cement company Ozinga,
delivery delays can clog redi-mix trucks
with hardened concrete. So Ozinga relies
on the latest technology to keep its trucks
moving efficiently. "All our trucks have
turn-by-turn directions, so we optimize
our trips to and from locations," Vice
President of Fleet Management Jeff
Bonnema explains. "The turn-by-turn
has real-time traffic in it, so if there are
issues with traffic, we are able to avoid it."
Drivers also have cell phone communication capabilities in their truck cabs
through tablet-mounted computers,
which only operate when the truck is
stopped. "We don't want them reading
or typing while driving," Bonnema says.
Messages to drivers are read out loud by
the equipment.
The system also captures the mileage driven and fuel used by the truck.
"Drivers are required to enter their
hours worked daily," Bonnema adds. The
Digital Fleet system that Ozinga has
used for more than five years also allows
the statistics and route of an entire trip
to be recorded.
Ozinga has more than 80 locations
in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and
Michigan from which it trucks redi-mix
concrete to construction sites. Its more

than 700 redi-mix trucks are staged
outdoors year-round with heaters when
needed to warm diesel fuel in the winter.
The company also has a fleet of 20
tractors and approximately 30 trailers
for hauling cement powder, sand and
aggregate to its locations. The tractors
last six or seven years and the trailers
usually more than 20 years.
Roll Out the Barrel
A form of maintenance that is unique
to the redi-mix industry is changing out
the barrels that roll continuously while
the cement is being delivered. These
are changed every five to eight years
depending on usage, while the trucks
themselves last much longer. "The
trucks don't put in a lot of miles, just a
lot of hours," Bonnema points out. "They
don't travel very far because we have a
perishable product."
The barrels are switched out by
overhead cranes at Ozinga's 20 maintenance locations, which provide preventive maintenance for all the company's
trucks. "We outsource brakes and sus-

pension changes," Bonnema says. "We
have gotten into engine and transmission overhauls on our older equipment,
but we do have a lot of vehicles on warranty. We can do pretty much anything
in our shops."
A Greener Fuel
Ozinga has made a strong commitment
to using compressed natural gas as a fuel
in 150 of its redi-mix trucks. The company has five CNG refueling stations,
four of which are open to the public.
"We have a group called Ozinga Energy,"
Bonnema notes. "Their primary focus is
to build stations and service CNG in the
private and public sector."
