cranes, which can each pick up 100 tons
at 100 feet, and 210 tons in tandem.
Our stevedores - Jones Stevedoring
and Ports America - have also invested in trailers, reach-stackers and
other equipment to ensure they can
efficiently move cargo off the docks to
waiting trucks or railcars. Both companies have continued to adapt and
modify equipment as necessary to suit
industry needs.
The port has nearly completed
its West Vancouver Freight Access
(WVFA) rail expansion, a $275 million
project that allows the port's capacity
to grow from 55,000 to 400,000 railcars per year and reduces regional rail
congestion by as much as 40 percent on

the BNSF Railway and Union Pacific
Railroad mainlines.
The port recently announced that its
rail entrance - a key piece of the WVFA
- won a 2016 Engineering Excellence
Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC)
Oregon. The rail entrance is a watertight, grade-separated concrete trench
along the Columbia River that provides
a second dedicated rail entrance into
the Port of Vancouver and eliminates
conflicts with the heavily traveled BNSF
rail bridge over the Columbia River.
The maritime industry as a whole has
invested in labor and equipment to keep
cargo moving, but it's becoming clear
that these individual investments aren't

enough to keep the U.S. West Coast
competitive. Our entire system of moving these cargoes from point A to point B
has to change.
The Port of Vancouver is partnering
with the ports of Longview and Portland, Jones Stevedoring, Foss Maritime,
Omega Morgan, the Oregon Trucking
Association and others to develop a high
and heavy corridor from the Columbia
River to the Midwest and Canada. The
corridor would be a dedicated route to
further increase the efficiency of moving
cargo between the U.S. West Coast and
the Pacific Rim.
The U.S. Gulf Coast already has a high
and heavy corridor, which helps provide
surety to shippers that they can permit
and move their over-dimensional and
heavy loads.
This kind of surety is why shippers
- despite added time and fees shipping
through the Panama Canal - are willing
to use Gulf Coast ports to move their
products from Asia. They know they can
get their cargo to its destination, which is
