A company can get comfortable with its equipment,
but getting too comfortable can lead to an issue if it sits
on its equipment too long. In this issue of Transportation
& Logistics International, you can see stories where organizations are choosing to update their equipment to improve their performance.
Our cover story, Nova Scotia Power,
used to allow vehicles to operate 10 to 12
years before replacing them. But this led
to higher maintenance costs and longer
downtimes, so it adjusted its model. The
energy utility now replaces most transport vehicles within four to six years and
bigger aerial devices and derricks after
eight years.
"We track the cost, the age and the
use of the vehicle," Fleet Manager
Jack Abraham tells Transportation &
Logistics. "As time goes by and costs go
up, there comes a crossing point where
you're spending more into the vehicle
than what it's going to be worth."
The Fleet Services Bureau of the city
of Long Beach, Calif., shares a similar
attitude. It is in the process of upgrading
many vehicles that were overdue to be
replaced. "We're catching up a backlog of

800 vehicles or so," Fleet Services Bureau
Manager Dan Berlenbach says.
The bureau is recapitalizing the fleet,
which has huge benefits. "Our fleet had
aged and that led to increased labor and
parts costs as well as downtime for our
customers," he recalls. "As we renew the
fleet, we see our operational costs and
downtime decreasing significantly."
These examples make a good case
for taking a closer look at your fleet,
and seeing if making upgrades might
actually help you unload vehicles that
are becoming burdens for you and your
customers.
