Lawyer Shuffle
Law firms have been active on the human resources front, poaching to beef up LatAm practices. Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy hired from Shearman & Sterling Andrew Bela Janszky as managing partner and Tobias Stirnberg as partner, both based in a new São Paulo o ce. Shearman & Sterling bounced back with promotions. It appointed partner Antonia Stolper to lead the LatAm group and Robert Ellison as managing partner of the São Paulo o ce. Elsewhere, Brazilian law firm Felberg e Associados added Fabrizio Sasdelli, Lucas Pedreira Lapa and Fabricio Soler as partners in its project finance, infrastructure and environmental law practices. And Giovani Loss joined Mattos Filho Advogados from Fulbright & Jaworski as a partner in the oil and gas practice. He is relocating from Houston to Rio and has experience in electricity, alternative energy, M&A, project finance and restructuring. Also in Brazil, Tozzinifreire Advogados says it has added Luciana Maria Agoston Burr to its capital markets group because of growing demand for projects and infrastructure financing related to the World Cup and Olympic Games. Burr specializes in financial markets law and was most recently employed at Rabobank, where she was head of the legal department.

of investment grade loans for BAML, based in Charlotte. Isaacs was previously an MD and head of LatAm finance at BNP Paribas.

Nomura Makes Wave

Citi Appoints

Citi has named Eduardo Cruz head of global banking for LatAm. He will remain in New York leading Citi’s investment and corporate banking throughout LatAm, reporting to Raymond McGuire, head of global banking, and Fernando Quiroz, CEO of the institutional clients group for LatAm. Citi also hired Alberto Pandolfi from JPMorgan to head M&A in LatAm. He was at JPMorgan for 10 years, most recently an executive director in the global M&A group. He now reports to Mark Shafir, Citi’s head of global M&A and Cruz. Citi also named Fidel Andueza as head of investment banking for Brazil, based in São Paulo. He moves over from being a partner with Citi Infrastructure Investors, and will report to Cruz as well as Gustavo Marin, CEO for Citi in Brazil and southern cone. Meanwhile, little over two years after getting her back on the LatAm loans desk, Citi has again su ered the resignation of veteran loans banker Monica Macia. Macia, who rejoined Citi in April 2008 after a one-year stint heading LatAm loans at UBS, is understood to be moving to a similar role at a competing bank. Elsewhere, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) hired Gonzalo Isaacs to run LatAm loan syndications. He will be based in New York, reporting to Peter Hall, MD and global head

Nomura has hired Adam Groothuis – a veteran of the underserved CentAm and Caribbean secondary markets – to lead a fledgling LatAm fixed income trading e ort based in New York, say people familiar with the move. Groothuis was most recently at RBS, and before that JPMorgan. He joined the US bank after the acquisition of Bear Stearns, where he spent 16 years and was latterly head of trading and a senior MD. Joining him at the Japanese bank is salesman Jonathan Josephs and research analyst Benito Berber, say people familiar with the hires. The Japanese bank stated earlier this year that it seeks an expanded role in LatAm and is deciding how best to allocate new sta and resources to a region where it was active until the late-2001 Argentine debt crisis. Elsewhere, Morgan Stanley’s São Paulo based LatAm investment banking head Charlie Stewart is transitioning into a bigger role at the US firm. He is due to replace Michele Colocci as deputy head of European investment banking. Christopher Harland remains LatAm chairman. Separately, Max Ritter is joining Morgan Stanley’s investment banking division as an executive director focused on the consumer and retail segment for LatAm. He was formerly at Citi. WestLB has appointed Gabriel Nores executive director in the global energy group responsible for origination of energy deals in the Southern Cone ex-Brazil. He joins from Dresdner in Brazil, where he was head of LatAm M&A. And Brazil DCM specialist Charles Achoa has left Credit Suisse to join RBS in Stamford, according to people familiar with the move. Achoa is to become head of LatAm DCM at the Scottish bank, overseeing bonds and loans with a special focus on Brazil and Mexico. Elsewhere, Vitro appointed to its board Guillermo Ortiz, chairman of Banco de Mexico from 1998-2009. BIS president Ortiz has been openly critical of Mexican companies that entered into derivatives that had nothing to do with their business or normal hedging of exchange and interest rate risk. Vitro disclosed in 2008 derivatives losses exceeding $227 million and is now trying to restructure its debt. Vitro also appointed to the board Mario Laborin, ex-director of Nafin, and Adrian Sada Cueva, a vice president in its glass containers division. Vitro says that close to 40% of its board members are now independent, exceeding the 25% minimum required by local law. LF
