Banks Still Hiring
Headhunters noted an unusually brisk summer for investment banks as they continued to scrap for talent throughout the region. Salaries are being bid up, especially in Brazil, which appeared set to return to the compensation inﬂation of 2007. Citi has tapped M&A specialist Francisco Salas from UBS as an MD to cover LatAm clients. He was previously an MD at the Swiss bank, which he joined in 1996. And Jean-Marc Dreyer was appointed as a senior member of its LatAm investment banking team, focused on strategic advisory coverage in Brazil. He will focus on oil & gas and metals & mining, based in São Paulo. He was previously at BNP Paribas, where he was director and head of power and natural resources in Brazil. Elsewhere, JPMorgan appointed former US senator and HUD secretary Mel Martínez as chairman for Florida, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. He will serve on JPMorgan’s executive committee and be the ﬁrm’s senior executive for the region, covering large corporations, non-proﬁts and governments. And Dan Zelikow is returning to JPMorgan as head of a new international public sector group within its global corporate bank. Zelikow left JPMorgan to become the IDB’s executive vice president and chief operating o cer in early 2007, opting to step down at the end of IDB president Moreno’s ﬁrst term. Elsewhere, BTG Pactual hired as partners Claudio Galeazzi, a restructuring expert who was chief executive of Pão de Açúcar for almost two years, and Roberto Martins de Souza, former CFO of Lojas Americanas. Galeazzi and Souza will work at BTG Pactual’s private equity and merchant banking unit. Meanwhile, BNY Mellon has named Juan Carlos Morales president of its Mexico unit and general manager of its corporate trust businesses in the country. And BNP Paribas appointed Luiz Beltreschi as co-head of FX options in the Americas. He was previously head of LatAm FX options at Deutsche Bank. Meanwhile, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) has appointed Mark Rosen to lead the LatAm ﬁnancial institutions group for global corporate and investment banking. He was most recently head of LatAm and Caribbean ﬁnancial institutions investment banking at Credit Suisse where he served for 12 years. Credit Suisse appointed Didier Mena, former CFO of Mexican microﬁnance company Financiera Independencia, to replace Rosen.

Ana Cabral-Gardner has joined Barclays as a São Paulobased MD in the investment banking division. She was previously head of LatAm ECM at Goldman, which she left in late 2008. She will cover the retail, consumer and healthcare sectors. And HSBC has appointed Monica Macia to run its LatAm loans e ort. Macia left Citi in early June. Latterly, she was working in the loans sales and trading department at the US bank, and is known in the market for her sales and distribution skills. Her arrival coincides with the recent departure of Federico Fiorentini, who had led LatAm loan origination. Deutsche Bank has also been bulking up its LatAm sta . Denis Parisien has joined as head of LatAm credit research. He replaces Anne Milne, who left earlier this year for BAML. Parisien was at Santander for four years, most recently as head of LatAm ﬁxed income research, and at Standard Bank prior to that. Meanwhile, Waldo Pérez Leskovar has joined Deutsche as a director responsible for M&A origination and execution in Brazil. Perez joins from Santander, where he was director and co-head of M&A Brazil. At the law ﬁrms, Hogan Lovells has enhanced its DCM and structured ﬁnance capabilities with the addition of Emil Arca as a partner based in New York. Arca – a veteran of the LatAm structured ﬁnance market – was formerly partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, where he worked for 16 years. And in Brazil, Ferrous Resources has appointed Jorio Dauster, who was CEO of Vale from 1999-2001, as chairman after the resignation of Gordon Toll. Fibria has appointed former NET Servicos CFO João Elek as director of ﬁnance, investor relations and risk management. And cable provider NET named Roberto Catalão as its new ﬁnance director, joining from Embratel.

Obituary: Francisco Gros

Market participants mourned the death in May of Brazilian citizen Francisco Gros, who had a long and distinguished career. Those who did business with the former president of Petrobras and BNDES, as well as ex-governor of Brazil’s central bank, remember his kindness and professionalism. “I always found him to be a very serious and straightforward person, and when he gave you his word you could take it,” says veteran banker Bill Rhodes. “He was a very bright person who always represented Brazil well. It is a great loss for the community,” he adds. Gros was most recently head of OGX, and had also run Fosfertil, as well as having had a senior role at Morgan Stanley. LF
