DeWain Valentine is described as
an American minimalist known for
his translucent glass sculptures
suggestive of machine made
objects. A purist in regard to his
use of material and form, the artist
is particularly interested in the
dissolution of physical form into shifting illusions of color and light. DeWain
finds endless inspiration from the "transparent colored space" of the sky and
sea. Often his works act as frames for these sections of sky, landscape, or
seascapes, as exemplified by this piece, created by an aqua colored glass wall
with water cascading to a pool below, located within the Poseidon Court at the
Surf and Sand Hotel.

"Greetings from Laguna"

"Greetings from Laguna" takes its inspiration from the willow fence that once
surrounded the previous historical business "The Pottery Shack." Inserted within
the steel willow fence are tourist postcards from the 1920s and 30s. The carved
and glazed ceramic postcards further connect the site to the pottery traditions of
Laguna Beach.

"La Casa del Camino"

Local artist William W. Riddle built the
La Casa De Camino hotel in 1927. He
envisioned it as a much-needed center
for culture and was a retreat for Hollywood
stars of the era. Dilesh Patel restored the
hotel in 1996 and created an inset marble
sign, in keeping with the historical significance of the building.
