on the Sunset Celebration happy
hour menu from 5 p.m. to sunset.
Diners can never go wrong with the
house-made chips and salsa or
guacamole paired with the breathtaking coastal view. (949-497-5434;

Main Street
Around since the 1950s as the former Fleur de Lis, Orange County's
only and oldest gay/LGBT owned
historic bar has been revived with
new floors, a new sound system,
dancing, karaoke and drag queen
bingo nights. Come for the Happy
Hour 4-8 p.m. Tues. to Thurs., and
the dancing. One-third of Main
Street's crowds each night consist of
straight couples or groups of female
friends who want to dance. (949494-0056; mainstreet-bar.com)

White House
Originally called Bird's White
House when it was built in 1918,
the White House restaurant has
evolved over the last century.
As the first restaurant in Laguna
Beach, the restaurant has a
colorful history of high-profile
residents and visitors, from Reggie
Jackson and Kobe Bryant to
Mick Jagger to Michael Jordan.
Today, the remnants of a staid
steakhouse are all but gone. Jazz
music has given way to modern
tunes. It's half restaurant, serving
an inventive take on California

cuisine, and half nightclub, providing an energetic yet cozy party
atmosphere with live music and
deejays spinning dance tracks
nearly every night. Bartenders
are liable to recommend a Pink
Floyd, but thankfully they haven't
forgotten how to make a terrific
Old-Fashioned. (949-494-8088;

Marine Room
Tavern
Modest almost to a fault,
the Marine Room Tavern is a

cherished chapter in Laguna's
storied history. The second bar
in town to get a liquor license,
it doesn't appear as though it's
changed much since it opened
in 1934. At a glance, the Marine
Room is the quintessential working man's watering hole. Drinks
are cheap, and simple pleasures
like dancing to live music bring
in folks from all over. Lawyers
who moonlight as bikers, artists
who teeter between success and
vagrancy, mailroom clerks who
made it to CEO: They're all here,

sidled up by the bar throwing
back a few cold ones with friends.
Owner Christopher Keller, whose
company, Casa Resorts, also
runs La Casa Del Camino, has
upgraded the space with cosmetic improvements, and added
draft beers and craft cocktails,
but has kept it a place "where
locals gather"-the tavern's longstanding motto. (949-494-3027;

Dizz's As Is
Past the wooden gate of a quaint
wooden-shingled bungalow of the
1920s, through a flower-filled garden
where diners can order a drink or
appetizers, is Dizz's As Is, a parlor
filled with photos of movie stars and
unusual antiques. This unique dining
room serves everything from filet
mignon to roast duck a l'orange.
Owned by the local Pitz family
since the 1970s-who stumbled
upon a restaurant named Dizz's
that "was being sold by a couple
who were affected by taking too
many hallucinogenics..." according
to the restaurant's official history-the restaurant still treasures
the mixed-matched dishes left
behind and uses them to serve
up fabulous continental cuisine,
which includes with each order,
Vermouth, Pate de Maison, Soup
du Jour, or House Salad and Hot
Sourdough Bread. (949-494-5250;
