the Lincoln County Process-for
extra-smooth, mellow liquor.

three to five days through 10
feet of sugar maple charcoal
processed on site-what
Jack Daniel's calls "The Extra

Originating with whisky from Scotland,
Virginia Distillery Co. (Lovingston) now
blends Virginia-distilled spirits with
Scotch whisky for the best of the Old
World and New World. Look for Virginia
Highland Whiskey finished in port casks
and whiskey finished in Chardonnay
casks plus small-batch spirits.
Besides more traditional whiskies,
MurLarkey Distilled Spirits (Bristow)
fashions flavored whiskey, like
cinnamon, cocoa, coffee, banana
and lemon. No nonsense about this
distillery's creativity!
Catoctin Creek (Purcellville) has been
making waves with award-winning
spirits made from locally sourced organic
ingredients and an accomplished female
distillery, co-owner Becky Harris. The
distillery's portfolio includes the flagship
Roundstone Rye whiskey, made from 100
percent organic rye grain and aged in
Minnesota white oak casks.
For 25 years, Belmont Farm Distillery
has been distilling spirits in Culpeper.
The distillery received national

MOONSHINE
The roots of moonshine-
especially deep in Franklin County,
Virginia-arise from illicit distillers
who had to operate at night to avoid
Prohibition-era revenuers. The
moonshine you find on Virginia ABC
store shelves today isn't illegal, but it
reflects these products, which were
often corn-based or fruit-based, unaged and flavored.
