I recently had this honor at the Friday
Night Dinner Program sponsored by
the Aleethia Foundation. For the past
seven years Virginia ABC has partnered
with William Grant & Sons to make a
Chairman Painter
donation to the Aleethia Foundation
which benefits wounded service members. We are proud of this partnership and
invite you to learn more, including how you can impact it directly, on page 23.
In addition to a salute to our military, you'll find this issue of Spirited Virginia full
of information about American whiskeys and bourbons. September is National
Bourbon Heritage Month; read on to discover the differences between these two
kindred, yet different, spirits. We also highlight several Virginia-made bourbons that

In September we also celebrate Virginia Spirits Month, and we're getting started
early by recognizing the 59 distilleries that call the commonwealth their home.
Check out the special Virginia Distillers Association supplement in this issue that
includes a map of distilleries with their own tasting rooms and plan your visits.
You'll learn more about the importance of barrels in the process of aging whiskies.
American white oak barrels and their degree of "char," from one all the way to four
(the alligator char), greatly influence the color and taste. The science of whiskey
barrels is an amazing story.
