ORANGE
LIQUEURS
The essence of the orange fruit
adds a citrusy, almost savory kiss
to different types of sweet liqueurs
(also called cordials). A liqueur,
by legal definition, is a flavored
spirit that begins with a neutral
sugarcane liquor, brandy or similar
liquor, and contains at least 2.5
percent sugar or other sweetener,
plus added fruits, flowers, plants,
juices or other natural flavoring.
One style of orange liqueur,
triple sec, originated in France. It
has a low sugar content-hence the
word "sec," which means "dry" in
French. Though it's easy to enjoy
neat, triple sec is commonly used
in popular cocktails such as the
Margarita, Cosmopolitan and B-52.
Another style, Curaçao,
originated on the island of-you

guessed it-Curaçao, off the coast
of Venezuela, is made with brandy
and peels of the local orange.
Current U.S. regulations don't
dictate where it's made or with
what kind of orange-or that it
should be blue, as some modern
examples are.
As you dabble in orange liqueurs,
put these on your shopping list.
Cointreau
The original triple sec, Cointreau
is a French liqueur flavored with
sweet and bitter orange peels.
The combination and the dry
"sec" offer a subtle, scintillating
flavor. Enjoy neat, over ice or in a
classic-or modern-cocktail.
Solerno Blood Orange
Liqueur
By starting with sun-drenched
blood oranges from Sicily, Solerno
creates an intense, natural orange
flavor. The liqueur works in a
variety of cocktails; but start
simple and refreshing by mixing
it with sparkling wine or lemon
sparkling water.
Grand Marnier
A blend of cognacs and the
distilled essence of tropical bitter
oranges go into this liqueur,
created in 1880. Slow aging in
French oak casks adds a welcome
complexity. Easy to enjoy neat, on
the rocks or in a cocktail.
Patron Citronge Orange
Liqueur
This premium orange liqueur is
made in Jalisco, Mexico, with
oranges from Haiti and Jamaica,
and sweetened with cane sugar.
The aroma offers sweet and bitter
